Forgotten Realms Lite

Obergnom

First Post
In the light of recent events concerning the forgotten realms, I began planning my next campaign.
The changes to the setting bore me, but I would really like to do a complete reset of the setting. I want to start in the Year of the Grey Box :) but with fewer gods and a changed cosmology.
I use the realms because I like a lot of the regions and my players know those pretty well, but I do not really think I need so many gods...

Here is my firsttry at a short list of gods:

Aumanator(LN) - god of bureaucracy, law, order, the sun, elemental fire, solidity, changelessness, oaths, nobility
Auril - Goddess of cold, winter, pain, hurt, agony, torment, suffering, torture
Bane - God of strife, hatred, tyranny, fear, revenge, retribution, betrayal, cruelty, political corruption, powerbrokers
Chauntea - Goddess of agriculture, farmers, gardeners, summer
Gond - God of artifice, craft, construction, smithwork, elemental earth
Ilmater - God of endurance, suffering, martyrdom, perseverance
Mask - God of thieves, thievery, shadows, intrigue, assassination, murder, deception, illusion, random mischief, misfortune, bad luck, accidents
Moander - god of decay, corruption, rot, disease, poison
Myrkul - god of the dead, death, old age, undeath, necromancy
Mystra - Goddess of magic, spells, the Weave
Oghma - God of knowledge, invention, inspiration, bards, glyphs, images, literature, scribes, cartography
Selune - Goddess of the moon, stars, navigation, prophecy, questers, good and neutral lycanthropes
Shar - Goddess of dark, night, loss, forgetfulness, unrevealed secrets, scalykind(Ssar)
Silvanus - God of wild nature, forests, forest creatures, dryads, autumn
Sune - Goddess of beauty, love, passion, spring, dawn, birth, youth, vitality, athletics, poetry, song, eloquence
Talos(CN) - God of storms, destruction, rebellion, elemental air, movement, speed, flying creatures
Tempus - God of war, battle, warriors
Torm - God of duty, loyalty, obedience, paladins, justice, guardians, protectors, protection
Tymora - Goddess of good fortune, skill, victory, adventurers, joy, happiness, dance, festivals, freedom, liberty
Umberlee(N) - Goddess of oceans, currents, waves, sea winds, elemental water
Waukeen - Goddess of trade, money, wealth

Of course, all of these gods are fairly importand (and thus powerful)

I am not that happy with Tempus, is name sounds silly, but I did not find a good replacement for the god of war. The name Tyr is the reason why that god got cut. (In germany most people pronounce it "Tür" ... the german word for door... I think you can guess how much fun it is to play a door cleric...)
Moander is in because I like to use Necromancer Games adventures (The campaign will make heavy use of Bard's Gate and City of Brass) and I think he is a good "Demon Lord of Frogs" replacement... evil rotten disease ridden Frogs!
Shar will be my replacement for Set, who is featured pretty often in Necro adventures...
Myrkul I am not sure about... he is not that good a replacement for Orcus... :-/

Comments? Suggestions? Did I miss importand "kinds" of gods?

Another thing is, I want to remove Racial deities.

Halflings - Tymora is a natural fit
Dwarfs - harder, maybe Aumanator and Gond
Elves - Silvanus and Sune
Gnomes - Gond, Tymora... unsure
(Half)Orks - Talos (Or lesser Demon Lords)
Drow - I think I would keep Lolth as a Demon Lord, or use Shar

arg, could a moderator please move this post to the general forum? It is not really a 4th Ed. threat. Or I did not intent it to be or become one...

... thanks!

We never had a problem with Tyr sounding like "Tür". As far as i know in english it's pronounced "Tier" anyway. An don't forget that Tyr was a germanic god, before he found his way into the Realms ;)

well, okay, lets say it like this: Old habits don't die. :)
While we all now the way it should be pronounce, "Tür" stuck with us...

Actually, Tyr being an "imported" god was another reason for me to throw him out... nothing wrong with Torm, if you ask me. (btw. the name is what killed Helm, too)

Arrgh!
THERE CAN BE NO REPLACEMENT FOR ORCUS!

If Bil and Clark hear that you want to replace Orcus they will reclaim the Necromancer products you own. :]

Replacing Orcus, what an absurd idea.

By the way, the Tyr cleric thing gets even better if you play in a group with a Thor priest (spoken Tor geramn for "gate"). Tyr and Thor. :D

...yep, I know. Actually, my players would not care if I used Orcus as the Lord of Undeath. They know him better than many FR deities. That would make Myrkul more of a Grim Reaper and remove the Undead stuff completely, maybe changing his allignment to true neutral.

the "Tür und Tor" thing... oh so true :)

I was Thor and my Friend was Tyr and the DM was fed up after 2 sessions.
But that was back in the 80ties.
Now I DM and I would close Tyr and Thor forever after a few of these jokes. :]

hehe :D

so, uh, what about those gods... :heh:

Give it to the Red Knight, perhaps? She's the Demigoddess of Strategy and Planning, and serves Tempus. It would mean changing her outlook a little to become a Goddess of War though.

Keep Orcus. The realms has devil and demon lords (see the free 2e module on the WotC site about rescuing the goddess of wealth from Grazzt) so Orcus fits right in unless you want to stick with the "only gods grant clerics powes" portion of the realms.
