Forgotten Realms - Public petition

First Post
Hi all, I'd like to inform you (some may already know if they post also on WotC official forums) that I started a thread to gather support from fans who do not want the Forgotten Realms Setting to be changed.
I'll post the link to my thread on WotC boards. Subscription to the boards is necessary for posting.
Thanks all. Spread the word: the more we are, the better.

Awhile back I put up a poll to get an idea of how many people around here favored change vs. how many wanted the realms to remain the same. Last time I checked the count it was 235 to 139 FOR changing the Forgotten Realms.

My opinion is that the Realms could stand a good spring cleaning, so I’m sorry that I can't join in on your petition.

Peace though,
Sam

As a longtime Realms fan (and purchaser of many an FR book), I'd just like to say that changing the Realms would be terribly awesome. Gotta shake things up, otherwise stagnation sets in.

You might note that a lot of the people voting for the change aren't current realms players. Also, a spring cleaning is a lot less drastic than what it seems like they're doing.

Anyway, it doesn't sound like it will help (and a lot of damage has already been done in the GHotR), but they did listen to Eberron fans apparently.

But do they need to restart the setting completely? FR has been changing and growing as D&D has, but this appears to be a huge jump, rather than "shaking things up." Just an opinion.

I think the realms needs a fresh start. The changes all sound intriguing and the realms is intimidating to new players. Their moving the timeline ahead doesn't hurt the current age, if you like the realms as is then play it in the "past" as oppose to the coming future.

What I think the die-hard realms fans who don't want change are afraid of change for change sake. That the world if evolving and becoming someplace new they have to relearn and explore scares the hell out of them, because familiarity is gone. It is like a fluff version of mastering the rules Monte Cook spoke of before.

It will be fine. The realms has gone through changes before. It will still have alot of what makes it the realms, just adding more danger and moving the PCs to the forefront of the action, which is good. Forgotten Realms has to many superheroes who sit around in it right now as it is. Kill 'em off I say, let them go out heroically and become legends.

I think more people would like to see the FR changed in some way, than not, me included.

Will we actually like the changes? We'll just have to wait and see.

I wish your petition well. I won't personally sign it, because I liked what I heard about the changes, but no skin off my nose if they don't, and I know it would make some fans happy.

Here's the thing, though. The reason the Eberron outcry made a difference, at least in part, is that the Eberron book's still quite some ways away. If the FR book is supposed to follow on the heels of the core books next year, odds are much of the rough draft is already finished.

I'm not saying this is the case, but it's certainly possible that the publishing schedule alone limits the potential effectiveness of any such petition.

I think the other thing is that the Eberron changes were only going to advance things by a few years. This would create more havoc with ongoing campaigns as they would be in "recent history" and the PCs would be more likely to survive to the see the changes. I assume as a result, the changes were not going to be quite as world shaking, and WotC can probably slowly introduce them over time.

FR on the other hand is a massive change. They are almost wiping the slate clean. It is more of a shock to people, but those who want to keep their campaign going have space to do so without running into conflicts with the new material (of course they don't get any new stuff of their own). People who want to play the current publications pretty much have to restart new campaigns, or jump their PCs ahead in time and cut the connection to their own recent history.

Since I haven't played the realms in years because I didn't like the way they were taking them, I don't have much interest in keeping the staus quo. I don't know if the changes will bring me back to the realms, but if your petition succeeds, I know I won't go back.
