Fortune Cards, we just received a preview

I think it will be very interesting to see what WotC announces at DDXP with regard to new organized play options and Fortune Cards. My fear is that they will announce a competitive game play option that will include the use of Fortune Cards. For that, the cards would have to be universally positive, which at present they are.

It's looking like you might have been partially right.

New Wizards Play Network D&D starting up in September.

It's not competitive in the sense of 'players against each other', but it does appear to be more of a 'challenge' event or quasi-tournament style, and they do encourage Fortune Cards.

Tomorrow night we will use our Encounters groups as guinea pigs and try out the cards. According to Wizards, the cards will be an official part of the next Encounters season.
Official, but still optional. Will people who don't bring Fortune Cards feel at a disadvantage to those who bring them? And, if they do, will they even bother to return?

Seems iffy to me. Seems to me you'd want to do an all-or-nothing thing: either everyone has them, or no one does.

I think you guys are missing who this is aimed at, the hyper competitive min/maxers. These are the guys that in 2009 did the Dungeons & Dragons Ultimate Dungeon Delve at the big cons.

It is not aimed at the folks playing D&D Encounters (intro play), or LFR (RPGA campaign play Heroic-Paragon-Epic), Ashes of Athas (Convention only play), or WWGD (pimp that new product).

Each of these scratches an itch. Some will cross over to other programs, some will stick to their little part of the Organized Play universe.

So if you are hyper competitive, character-optimizing fiend, then this program will be for you. Otherwise, nothing to see here...

My Two Coppers,

Starting in September?

Why are they announcing this eight months in advance?
I can think of three possibilities:

a) They are going to start testing it in some select stores and want to announce it before news 'leaks'.

b) They wanted additional news items, and this was ready to be announced.

c) They'd mentioned that future WPN D&D programmes were being developed (and that Fortune Cards would play a part in them) and felt it worth giving some more information about this programme to stop people asking.
