I think that fortune cards where not quite as bad conceptually as stabbing myself in the face with a fork, but I have a hard time seeing myself implementing stabbing myself in the face with a fork as poorly as they where implemented.

Fortunately, over here in my little universe, they no longer exist.

I've used them, and using them did not remove my annoyance. That said, I allow people in my campaign to use them as-designed at the cost of a feat. I don't like removing options.

I just ordered a complete set. I'll not be using them as per the RAW, instead I'm gonna use the following house rules:

- The entire deck is a pool to be used for all players.
- A player can draw 2 cards and choose to keep 1 when he/she does something cool, clever or imaginative in or out of combat.
- A fortune card can either be used as per the card description, ordiscarded for a +2 fortune bonus to a single skill check (the "fortune" bonuses don't stack: no discarding three cards to get a +6 bonus).
- After a successful extended rest, players can share fortune cards with each other.
- Max hand limit of three fortune cards.

We are going test these rules. If they don't work out, we'll change them. I don't expect the fortune cards will be handed out often.

They are another fiddly bit to remember, add more time to each player's turn, and make the game more like a boardgame. My fate points let people change their luck enough. The only way I could see using fortune cards is as a reward for a player doing something awesome, not as a deck that they draw a card from each turn.

They're just not a good idea, as presented. The same cards, sold in complete decks as a DM accessory, OTOH, have a lot of potential.
Yeah, I really like the idea of using cards in a game, but randomized packs are a bad idea. Non-randomized sets would be best, perhaps in the form of themed minidecks(ie. power source or role). But as they are presented now, they're just a bad idea. Or even to add in new systems, and not simply for a bonus in combat. I remember In dragon during the paizo days they had a method for character generation that used the three dragon ante deck, I liked it in that it managed to be both random and produced characters that had the same power level, so no random dice producing ubermench and soon-to-be-dead weaklings. Things like that I want to see more of.

Nice ideas.

How do you order a complete set? Have people constructed them and put them up for sale on ebay? Or has WotC started selling complete decks?

I hate fortune cards with such an immense depth and pure burning rage, that I cannot adequately express in words how much I dislike them. I cannot think of something that Wizards has done recently that is dumber than fortune cards - albeit I have a few things that come close (like releasing a monster builder that cannot build monsters). I will absolutely never allow them in any of my DnD games period.

Yes to the second question, no to the third one. I bought my set from Auggies, but it doesn't look like he has any more complete sets for sale at the moment.

I ordered my set from Troll & Toad. They just restocked and currently have six complete sets for sale. If you're not willing to shell out ridiculous amounts of money for 80 flimsy cards (I'm an old Magic-player, so I'm used to that), you could instead order one of each common and maybe, if you want to, one of each uncommon card. That would cut the cost considerably and you could still try out house rules similar to mine.

Hmm, so we had like 1 post saying they like the cards as is? And then various house rules, including as a DM reward (which I can totally see)?

The poll is coming out pretty negative. Interesting to see if it stays that way, and how people will feel 6 months or a year from know.
