No, there were orders of "Knights" that used magical items to become jaguars or eagles.

While there are tabaxi (cat people) in the Realms, they are native to Maztica, not the Jungles of Chult. The "Tabaxi" of Chult are actually a human tribe, first detailed in FRM1 - The Jungles of Chult, now referred to as "Chultans" in products such as Races of Faerun to avoid the confusion evinced by previous posters.

One obscure source of "cat people" is actually Anauroch. If you have the old "Forgotten Realms" comics from DC, there were a few issues detailing a secret stronghold of "cat people." It's never been clearly stated who or what they are, but I would probably go with evil werelions from Zakhara in my campaign. Going on the 'portal' idea, he could be any number of cat-people from older D&D worlds. Rakasta from Mystara/Known World/Savage Coast would be appropriate.

If you pick up on that idea, might wanna make him a descendant of a catlord relative.

Otherwise any mid level priest will drop a dismissal on him, sending him to the beastland, or 20% of the time sending him to a random plane !
