Halaster Blackcloak recently gained Chosen of Mystra status, and was able to overcome his insanity.

how lame! that was the basis of his appeal. ;) and why mystra, why not someone more appropriate like velsharoon or someone?

And the former Chosen of Gilgeam still roams Unther...

His name's Shuruppak, and his stats can be found in the ELH.

He's a Human Fighter20/Rogue3/Wizard7.

I think it has the potential to be cool if Halaster keeps his evil alignment and Mystra is bound not to strip him of being a chosen. I always find it interesting as well when the good guys are forced to go to one of the bad guys for help.

Last I heard, Halaster's alignment has changed to Chaotic Neutral.

You also learn some of this in Silverfall.

Damn you Jay. No I am going to have to finish El in Hell. ;)
I couldn't force my self past the first few chapters, but is Blackcloak is in there I will force myself to read it.

It is a pretty crummy book, IMO. I didn't enjoy the other Elminster books, but I bought this one thinking, "Not only does El suffer, he suffers in Hell!" Unfortunately, it really isn't all that hellish, and they make Asmodeus look like the Chosens' bitch boy. Feh.

All in all, a more apt title would've been This Book is Hell: Memoirs of a Boring, Old Mage.

Are you sure? The ELH still has him listed as Chaotic Evil.

Well he is not listed as a chosen, and he is insane according to that entry as well, so I would assume its meant to be a reworking of Halaster as he was found in the FRCS. However, assuming that what has been stated above in this thread is true(and I have no reason to believe it's not) then that entry is no longer really up to date for those who run their FR on the bleeding edge of the official timeline.

Point taken. And I agree that he is no longer insane, as that seemed to be made clear within the book. However, an 'alignment shift' is a bit more game specific (one might even call it metagame knowledge), and I'm curious as how would come across such information.
