free actions, how many per round?

just what the title says? is there an official ruling on this anywhere? i think it'd depend on what the individual action were. (and a certain amount of reason) but that's just my own POV not really based on any concrete rules.

The official answer is "DM's discretion". In our last campaign, we had a house rule that it was 2 by default.

Accordsing to page 121 in the PHB, the only limit is what the DM feels reasonable.

The exception being quickened spells, which can't be used more than once per round.

Did that include drawing throwing daggers with Quick Draw?

I'd say as many as you'd like. I mean how many free actions can one get in a round? I'd disagree with 2 per round though, since there are many situations where you can get more than three. Like if you are hasted, have a quickend spell, and a 5 foot move, or if you have expert tactician, take a 5 foot move, you couldn't draw a weapon with your quick draw. It should pretty much be common sense though that a person can't use quick draw all 14 longswords and then drop them.

one good way I saw to deal with this was to give as many free actions as your Dex modifier, with a minimum of 1.

I think the official answer is "as many as is reasonable". By default you can do as many free actions in a round as you can, but your DM is allowed to (and should) constrain this based on common sense.

Shout something, drop a weapon, draw a weapon. That's three that most will find agreeable to in a round (with the quickdraw feat).

Fire 6 arrows, while shouting. That's 6, isn't it (presuming you had an arrow cocked to begin with).

The correct answer is indeed, DM discretion. Just thought I'd give two examples wiht more than 2 free actions.

I have also heard you could get as many as you have attacks in a round, i.e., as you progress, you would get more and more. Unaddressed in your question is how many times can you do the SAME action in one round. Moving the facing on a tower shield, which is free, can only be done once per round for instancefor free, other changes require a standard action.
