Free Feinting

Apologies if this has already been covered.

The Invisible Blade PrC grants the ability to Feint as a free action. Is there a limit to how many times you can do this per round, or could you attempt to Feint before every attack?

Before every attack, yes.

You can't feint freely until you succeed though, ie:

- I feint
- It doesn't work
- I feint again
- it doesn't work
- I feint
- it works
- i attack.

IIRC, the creator of the class posted somewhere (on the WotC boards?) that it is meant to be usable once per round. With the ability description in CW not clarifying it, that's the way I'd rule anyway.

IIRC, he posted that he meant it to be useable once per attack...

There's an unseen blade in an epic game I play in. The dm lets him feint before every attack; so would I. The RAW state only that a dm may limit the number of free actions available per round; there's no hard and fast rule on that one.

Cheers.

OK. I see that the official rule is that you get to attempt to feint once per attack roll... does that seem overpowered to anyone else? That's a lot of potential sneak attack damage.

I may allow multiple feints (but only one attempt per attack roll) per round, but at a, say, -4 penalty to the Bluff check each time after the first... or only allow one per round. Thoughts?

I say let them go crazy and feint all they like. They won't be to feint any more often than they might get a flank. It requires an opposed roll. Alot of creatures immune to sneak attack for a variety of reasons such as undead and dragons (assuming you use the rule that says creatures to large to reach their vitals can't be snuck attack. I usually use more than one size category larger than the opponent). The fun of playing a rogue is being able to sneak attack. I say let them go off on occasion.

I seem to recall that there is a cumulative bonus to Sense Motive against feints done by the same person during the same combat. Am I off my rocker?
