I use a lot of photos that I've taken of many types of surfaces, and run them through hue, saturation, constrast and other subtle changes till they become what I want them to be, lol. To help it look less like one photo, I switched blocks of the image around to make it look like unevenly colored tiles. The lava on my other large map is actually a stone texture, change to gradient red to black, constrasted drastically, and then I "overlay" layered it with a blurry red blob of paint that makes it look radiant. It's a whole lot of fiddling, but the results tend to come out well. Hope this helps.
