Free PDF's for the Gencon Deprived

I'd love to go to GenCon, but I don't really have the money. Also, none of my friends have the money either, so if I was able to scrape together enough to go then I'd have to go all the way to the USA on my own, which doesn't appeal to me.

My wife wouldn't appreciate me going on holiday without her, but she's not a gamer so she wouldn't want to come.

Also, I have a vague idea I'd need to renew my passport, even though it hasn't expired, because it doesn't have some chip or other that the USA is insisting on before allowing British people into the country.

I will make it one day ......

Besides, being in the middle of writing my Ph.D. Thesis, you mean ? Well GenCon is a bit far away for me. And combine it to the fact that my monetary ressources are tight with the new baby and all... There is now way I could go this year.

I live in Australia. My current funds are going into paying off a repair bill for the car. I have been thinking of the "Get a Gamer to Gencon" fund raiser to have a bunch of people throw $2 or something into paypal and get me there for a year. Then I can be roped into running Perrenland regional modules at GenCon for Living Greyhawk; but I think Wes Nicholson gets all that jive.
I'm sitting here, in a semi warm room (it getting colder), listening to music and drinking a fine Coopers Vintage Ale (its beer, not beer flavoured water like urine filtration; aka Budweiser) and wanting more free pdf's, and tshirts, and a print copy of Wildwood from Bastion Press, and to wake up on a pile of plushy d20's holding a bottle of alcohol and in the arms of some E3 booth babe dressed up like a Succubus... but I have good beer so I guess its not that bad... and a free pdf on top would be wonderful.
I'd love to make it one year, touring the US from city to city just going to comic conventions and gaming conventions. And popping by peoples places to serve them a kobold leg on toast.

No kids but...

We can't go this year (the wife games as well) becuase our cat is psychotic.

Last time we went to GenCon, our cat (see my avatar) flipped out on the cat-sitters and woke them up at 3:00 AM, thrashing around behind the living room tv and meowing like she was going to die. (nothing was wrong with her)

When we got home, I don't know who was grumpier, the cat or the sitters! ;)

Anyway, we've been avoiding long trips since then. I won't even get into the cat's acts of "retaliation" in the days following our return!

I just can't justify the expense or the vacation time. With three kids, school starting last week, and fall baseball starting this week, it just would not work for me.

Plus, although the swag would be nice, I don't need the temptation to buy more gaming stuff that I will probably never use. I find that the more I game, the less I buy. My theory is that I buy gaming books to fill the gaps when I am not getting to actually play enough. These days, I am playing plenty, and having a great time.

For me its simple survival.

My wife is do to give birth on September 5th to our first child. If I were to leave for a weekend at this point, especially for a gaming convention she'd want to be at as well, I firmly believe she'd mount my head on a pike in the front yard. :D
