Freeport and Eberron

First Post
I haven't played in Freeport at all, though I have read a lot of good things about it. I am workingon an Eberron campaign, and want to set it in a city. I don't want to use Sharn. I am thinking about getting Freeport:city of advednture. It looks like it would be a good fit for Eberron, particularly the Lhazaar Principalities. Any thoughts?

I think it could work. You would of course need to make some changes.

There is alot of transportation magic in Eberron so your going to have to decide how that will effect shiping and piracy.
You should re-work some NPC stats to take into account specific Eberron stuff.
How do the warforged fit in?

In many ways placing Eberron in Freeport would work well. They both lend themselves to a swashbuckling feel and Freeport's history would easily dovetail with the Eberron timeline.

Perhaps the biggest drawback to inserting Freeport in Eberron is with the gods. Freeport prominently features several very active gods- the Unspeakable One, Harrimast, and Yarash. Eberron's deities on the other hand, are extremely withdrawn, the argument can be made that they don't exist in the usual D&D sense at all. I think that questioning the existence of the gods, even while drawing power from them, is an important stylistic element of Eberron, and it would be hard to place Freeport in that context.

Hmm... I didn't know about the Freeport gods. Even though Eberron's gods are not all that active in world, some of the churches are extermely active. The church of the Silver Flame, for example. Would it work to back off Freeport's gods, but balance this out by making there followers more active?

Minor warning about Freeport. There is a definite CoC (Lovecraft) undercurrent in Freeport. The serpent god Yig, the Unspeakable One (Hastur the Unspeakable), the Brotherhood of the Yellow Sign (Hastur worshippers), and the wizards guild was founded by worshippers of the Crawling Chaos (I can't spell the god's name.) That said, sounds like a fun mix. Have fun.

The Silver Flame is not a church or religion- they're fanatics that weild LG as a weapon. So much like today's belief systems.

sorry if I affended anyone.

Still- I like 'em in the game world. ;)

MOST of Freeport practically SCREAMS to be placed in the Lhazaar Principalities. The political climate of Freeport would fit hand-in-glove.

The gods wouldn't be that big of an issue, as the gods don't take an active hand, it's mostly through their worshippers - be they serpent people, or priests, assassins, etc. The Cthonic elements are also easy to assimilate: The Daelkyr and the Cults of the Dragon Below would fit easily there, but I swear not being able to run Madness in Freeport unadulterated would be a crying shame.

"Look, Robin! It's the Bat-signal! No, wait, that's not the EEEEEAAAARRRGH!" :)

The biggest problem might be from the impression I get that Freeport was designed with a VERY low-level and low-magic atmosphere in mind. The low-level is not an issue, but in Freeport so much is dependent on there not being magical conventional ways to solve certain problems. That could be influenced by Lhazaar's provincial nature, but the PC's would likely very rapidly change all that.

The other problem that affects Eberron's feel is that Freeport has guns, and firearms and black powder make up an important part of the "feel" of the setting, but it's NOT a part of Eberron. You could remove them and replace with conventional magic, but you lose some of the "piratey goodness."

I've run Freeport in the past and decided against allowing blackpowder. It still worked great. So you don't really need to guns and cannons to get the pirate feel.

I do agree that it is much more easily dropped into a lower-magic world.
