Frostburn: To buy or not to buy?

Yep, whole bunches of [fire] type undead running around. WTF? I can't think of ANY, unless you get goofy and make an undead fire dragon. But then, isn't it just an undead dragon, and would lose the [fire] subtype?

Why fix on the particular well part? The feat can affect also undead without the fire subtype. It is only useless against undead immune or resistant to cold - and these are not as common as some might think (about 7 out of 21 in the core rules are immune or resistant). It's real usefullness will lie in the amount of damage it will do - something neither of us knows until we page through the book (or actually get it previewed). That's something that applies to all the ten list items. I don't quite get the flavor of the bardic feat as well - because the preview doesn't mention the flavor behind it.
And the icechucker? It made me go "ice-chucks, yo!", because it sounds rather silly. Maybe it will still be silly when I see more of it (and I think this will be the case). Maybe it won't.

Get Frost and Fur. Its by Monkey God and its damn good. It might not have penguion familiars but what it does have is really good. Plus, and this is silver lining on a bad thing, Monkey God is no longer making d20 products so you should be able to find it for a good price. I've seen them going for 50% off.

As the author of Frost and Fur, I just wanted to repeat for the record that the MonkeyGod book was written long before anyone heard of Frostburn. I did not set out to "directly compete with WOTC."

The distributor has since recalled Frost and Fur (not selling well enough, go figure), so it's about to get a lot harder to find.

IIRC, WotC stated they would do no more soft covers - hardcovers only. I don't know if that still stands since they're getting back into adventures. But that's why what should probably have been a softcover, is now a hard cover.

IMO, it appears overpriced as well.

I have not immediate need for Frostburn, so I'll see what the reviews say and look for it on the cheap somewhere down the line, if at all.

Considering the sorry state of affairs my Silver Marches book is in, I wish they would have done this at the outset.

Not if you use the Skeleton or Zombie templates on the WotC site. The new undead keeps elemental subtypes.

In anycase, I probably won't buy it. I just don't know if I'd ever use enough to make it worth the cost.

Well, Frostburn is 224 pages long. That's longer than the Complete Series, the Planar Handbook and Races of Stone.

I'm very happy about the "hardcover only" policy, because hardcovers are far, far more durable: and that's very important to me, as I'll transport my books many kilometres just to get to my regular session.

Remember the 1E PHB? 128 pages hardcover.

IMO, it appears overpriced as well.

Unfortunately, from next month, all new books have the $34.99 price rather than $29.99. (I'm not particularly surprised, especially considering that the price of transport due the oil price has also risen significantly )

I'll more than likely pick it up. I'm unlikely to use much of it, but it'll still probably be decent. However, if I feel the urge to vomit at my FLGS, I'll probably pass.

I am not sure about buying Frostburn. It feels like a splatbook, but at hardcover prices.
Then I noticed this article at WotC site; 10 reasons why you should get Frostburn

After reading them, I feel less likely to buy this book.

What do you guys think?

This is all very well, but does it have anything on the Land of Black Ice or black ice itself?
