No, I forgot no such thing. Asking a person to clarify a statement which appears unclear to you is not rude - if you saw any offense in me asking you for clarity, it is because you imagined it.

You don't start with "what?" And you don't follow up with "trying to say". And the you don't tell someone that he is incorrect if you can't prove it.
Next time just ask for a clarification if you can't follow. The no offense is taken.

Edit: just to clarify, I am German and I learnt as a child that you don't answer "Was?" (which translates to "What?") but instead you ask "Wie bitte?" if you didn't understand. Maybe that is different in English so I am sorry that I took offense.

Ah, yes. Cultural differences can cause some friction when it comes to deciding what is or is not rude. I apologize that I neither realized you are German, nor would I have known that there is a difference in rudeness between asking "What?" and "Beg your pardon?" in the culture you were raised with, which is not present where I grew up because it is the tone of the words, not the words themselves that carry rudeness - and there is no tone in text.

Also, I was taught that "are you trying to say" is the less rude option compared to me actually deciding for myself that you did actually say the thing I would be asking if you meant.

And saying "Next time just ask for clarification if you can't follow." is entirely unhelpful to say when doing that exact thing is what I did this time.

I have calmed down now and was not at the beginning of that post. So sorry if I was rude but i am glad you understand why I took offense. So hopefully next time there is no such misunderstanding ;)
