My most recent character was a riff on a stereotype.
Dwarf Barbarian with 5 Intelligence but a 12 Wisdom.
He was brash. He never lost a fight. The ones where he was knocked out don't count because he didn't remember them. He was very quickly left out of any negotiations/important conversations because he usually wanted to use his axe to settle the debate if he felt he was losing.
Also, we stayed in one city and used it as a base. With the DM's permission, I made it my home city. I helped the DM flesh out many NPCs by simply claiming "I know him!". This allowed the DM to utilize my character as a round a bout information font (if he wanted to). Mung the Half Orc Rat Pie Baker was my character's best friend! And gave me great discounts on Rat Pies after I helped rescue him (a side plot created by the DM to help spur the main plot along).
He was fearless. After listening to the party discuss plans over and over (these guys were paranoid for some reason! 2 hours real time to decide if they wanted to go through a portal), he would simply charge through, claiming he would smash any opponent. He usually sprung whatever trap was waiting, and could make the saves or absorb the damage, allowing the party to come in and finish off the rest of the bad guys with ease.
And, with the decent Wisdom, he would occasionally come up with wise points when the party was stuck, allowing us to move on.
And the other players (mostly) went along with it. The other dwarf was forever challenging him to drinking contests (which he never lost, because he never remembered passing out and would threaten anyone with his axe if they disagreed!). The eventually decided to use me as the meat shield, albeit reluctantly, but made sure the cleric was always nearby to heal me.
He went from Level 1 to Level 12 before he was retired. A great character. And just a straight Barbarian. No special feats, no dips into other classes, no prestige class. Just my version of The Tick.
