Fun with hardness and hitpoints

First Post
I was looking into hitpoints of weapons the other day, and realized the chart in the SRD doesn't have a spot for two handed metal hafted weapons. I assume that with such a huge metal head, a Goliath Greathammer has a metal haft. Plus, it looks like metal in the book. Going by the obvious progression, two handed weapons have twice as many hitpoints as one handed weapons.... which makes a medium sized greathammer have 40. Large weapons have twice as many, meaning a large greathammer has 80.

So I was thinking... how ridiculous could I make this? Make it adamantine and dwarvencraft... adamantine adds 1/3 to the hitpoints... that's 26 more... 106, dwarvencraft adds 10 and 2 to hardness... 116hp (22 hardness). Make it magic with a +5 enhancement, that adds +50 hitpoints and +10 hardness... we now have a weapon with 166 hitpoints and 32 hardness.

Now we get to matter manipulation - the psionic power. Can add up to 5 hardness, which also adds 15 hitpoints per inch of thickness... I've determined in my other greathammer thread that if it's a solid block on the end of a stick, it's about 5x5x8", so that's 5" thick, which means 75 more hitpoints. Grand total (I'm deliberately staying pre-epic):

Hardness: 37
Hitpoints: 241

Dayum.

If I were ruling on that, I'd give you extra hitpoints on the weapon *only* for the thickness of the haft when it comes to matter manipulation.

After all, that's why morning stars are so easy to sunder.

Hmm... yeah, I suppose... I wish they'd quit it with the "hitpoints per inch of thickness" crap. It's fine if you're attacking a *wall*, but if you're attacking anything else, it's almost impossible to determine how "thick" a randomly sized and shaped thing is. Should have just been something like +1 hitpoint per point of hardness for light weapons, +2 for one handed, +4 for two handed (double or halve according to size as per usual).

Anyway... just having fun twiddling with numbers... Call the haft two inches thick (which is pretty small for a large sized weapon), and it's like +30 hitpoints to the 166, making it 196.

196 hitpoints and hardness 37... Yeah, go ahead, sunder my weapon ('course, it would be an insanely good weapon to sunder *with*)

Have a high level sorcerer/wizard cast hardening (a 6th level spell from Magic of Faerun) on your greathammer. It increases hardness by one point per caster level. So at least +13 to hardness :)
