I have to disagree about the Topiary Guardians and Crawling Hands; I'm pretty sure they were created specifically so that people could recreate the scenes from The Shining or Evil Dead in their game.

Of course not. Crawling Hands were clearly to simulate the Addams Family.

I saw this and it lead me to the medieval bestiary. The main source seems to be Pliny the Elder, but lots of good stuff here. I'm not surprised we haven't seen an official ichneumon, given how favored dragons are among some D&D fans.

Plus, we get this mythical bird that can eat anything, even iron. Has anyone heard anything else about the ostrich? :)

Who cares if some of these are goofy? Did you have fun with them? Then that's all that matters.

As for the owlbear, how is adding an owl's head to a bear's body any different then adding an eagle's head to a lion's body? If the griffon is cool, then why not the owlbear?

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to feed my giant space hamster... ;)

OK, this had me cracking up uncontrollably.

Where are the underwear monsters from?

The bonnacon is indeed in the lethal lexicon. I love the LL except for Pliny's Bull, I don't care if it is a classic monster, I don't like poop jokes. Beeholders and tiger-striped dragons rock however.

Because eagles and lions are both awesome. Bears are okay, but owls are totally lame. I give owls a 1/2 star out of five, and they just bring down the bear even further when crammed onto his neck.

The awesomest hybrid monster EVER would, of course, be a tiger with a shark's head. Tigers are awesome, and sharks are awesomely terrifying. These are all scientific facts from an encyclopedia. An awesome encyclopedia.

Tiger-striped dragons? :D

I think I may have just discovered my next PDF purchase! Is there a print version?

I recently had an up-close-and-personal experience with a greater horned owl (maybe I'll post a photo or two tonight) at a falconry show. For something that weighs only a couple of pounds, I'll give the owl plenty of predator points!
