Templates

An idea I had (and you can check this if the old board's files are still accessible somewhere) was that furries should be templates applied on existing humanoids.

For example, feline + gnome => cat (mysterious, with a touch for magic and a taste for comfort); feline + half-orc => lion (tough fighter), feline + elf => wildcat, feline + dwarf => tiger, and so on. Canine + Halfling => Fox, canine + elf => wolf, canine + dwarf => St. Bernard, and so on.

That way, you would have a limited set of template (feline, equine, canine, rodent, bird, fish, amphibians (frog & toad, salamander), cow, sheep, deer, porcine, ape/monkey, etc.; maybe other for insects if you allow them). And for each template you would have the resulting furry for common humanoids, lets take the standard ones (human, dwarf, elf, gnome, halfling, half-elf, half-orc; plus goblin, hobgoblin, bugear, orc and kobold if needs be).

The advantage of this approach is that it would factorize the work needed, because you won't have to write every single creature, just templates for broad categories, and associate most combinations with the most appropriate animal specie.

In a way I already have a system like that in place.

Instead of applying a "furry" template to a standard race, however, I have a list of general species with their equivalent ability score modifiers, and for a few specific species with certain special abilities I have those listed.

BUMP! Added the converted player characters from my short lived Fauna campaign, and wrote up a little descriptive blurb about each one. The descriptive blurb comes only from my recollection of how the players ran their character, not from any character backstory the players wrote. :)

If ever you read French, you should really get the comics "De Cape et de Croc" (which could somehow translate to "swashfang", maybe ?), by Alain Ayroles and Jean-Luc Masbou, published by Delcourt. It's not a full-fledged furry setting (since most peoples are human), but the main heroes are a smart French fox and a proud Spanian hidalg Wolf. Plus, they have a rabbit sidekick. Sometimes, you see other furries as well, like a pig among a pirate crew.

It is a pleasure to read, with lots of litterary references and humor, packed in a picaresque and theatrical plot. One of the best "BD" ever.

Luckily these comics where translated in dutch , so I had the pleasure of reading them. Good stuff.

For animal templates (a lot of em) try the TMNT and/or After the bomb books from Paladium. Their mutation system and their timetravel system, are really good. And you can probably pick them up at the bargain bin of your local gamestore.

If you want I could dig thru some old backups to see if I still have the electronic version I made years ago.
