But then G.I. Joe wouldn't be a Real American Hero, he'd be a Real Multilateral Politically Correct Hero designed to be inoffensive to America Haters.

It just dosen't have the same ring to it.

They'd still be Real American Heroes, 'cause you KNOW America would be paying for it, whether it was under NATO or not. ;)

I never thought the "real American hero" tagline was entirely right for the version of G.I.Joe I grew up with, more of a throwback to the old 12" doll version, 'cause a lot of the Joes WERE on loan from other countries and such.....

Boy, bad guy organizations are so fun to stat, right? I'm a G.I. Joe fan of the T.V. Series. Pure pulp, but I had problems wondering if Joe was real or not back then. Anyway, I think G.I. Joe has a lot of revelance for today, even though Hasbro doesn't use real world events for inspiration. :(

Doesn't explain Destro, though. And Destro was really the brains of Cobra's outfit.

Edit: I take that back. You do explain Destro. However, Destro is still the brains of Cobra's outfit. Everything the Joes do is in perfect reaction to Destro's planning. This makes Destro the real villain and Cobra Commander is just a puppet head.

Real-life mercanaries tend to be poorly-trained bullies. They aren't highly-trained professional soldiers by any stretch of the imagination.

That's a very hollywodised view. You're probably thinking of the guys working for some tin pot dictator or drug kingpin just waiting for (insert the name of your favorite action hero) to come along and blow their brains out with style. My dad lives and works in the oilpatch in Equador and Columbia. The officers of the private "security force" hired to protect their wellsites are formed in a large part of former SAS. Why? Well your average special forces soldier makes between 30 and 40 K a year during peacetime. He could easally expect to double that by working for the private sector. There are a lot of very well trained well equiped mercenary companies out there with very good professional reputations.

Personally I see GI Joe as something along the lines of the French Foreign Legion. Though under the control of the US goverenement recruitment is open to all who manage to pass their stringent entry requirements. They are technically speaking a mercenary company due to the fact that their existance is denied by the US goverenment but the upper ranks are all former US servicemen (and women) which helps esure the loyalty of the organization as a whole.

Just as an aside. I would have the people who move up in the Cobra group be treated exceedingly well. I always thought it was stupid that some evil organizations ruled by fear and such but instead show an organization where everyone is taken care of. Sort of Miafiso in a way. If your Cobra we do everything to make you happy. Think of Cobra Com. as seeing the rank and file as his. He takes care of what is his. It engenders loyalty and explains why they can recruit so widely they offer everyone what the want. Comfort and safety. They are evil in what happens to those not part of Cobra. Greed and power are not the only motivators available. Cobra works becuase it uses all the motivations available. It also puts a little moral question to GIJoe in that the reason some joined Cobra was because america, the govenement, someone wasn't takingcare of them and Cobra did. The person isn't so much evil as human. Now they are loyal to Cobra.

The higher ups can be pure evil without the rank and file all being the same.

Just a thought.
