Galactica news

Not sure how I feel about this (I wasn't a fan of the mini series) but it looks like something will be done with it.

A trustworthy source tells us the new GALACTICA is a go

While fans of the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA "re-imagining" wait for official word to find out whether or not The Sci Fi Channel has decided to take the show to series, we've heard from one of our trustworthy sources on the matter. According to this Vancouver-based source, the Channel has given the producers of the new GALACTICA a six-episode commitment. It just hasn't been officially announced yet.

Debuting to strong ratings, last month's broadcast of the two-part, four-hour BATTLESTAR GALACTICA mini-series earned the Sci Fi Channel its third highest ratings ever for a program. The second night of GALACTICA grabbed a larger share of the audience than the first night. Usually this kind of good news would be enough to launch the program into a full-fledged series but the show's high cost per episode (which is ironically the same kind of issue that led to the original GALACTICA's swift cancellation after just one season) is contributing to cold feet by Channel suits. But as our source tells us -- and we know who they are and their previous established track history is solid -- the Channel has ordered a half-dozen hour-long episodes. It's expected that all of the primary cast members from the mini-series will re-appear in the series version of GALACTICA.

Tht's good news if it proves to be true. We can hope for three things:

1) That the new episodes are as good as the four hours of miniseries produced so far.

2) That they'll perform respectably in the ratings.

3) That, if #1 and #2 happen, the clowns running SciFi will have the good sense to order more episodes.

As much as I want this series to happen, both the Scifi channel and Ronald Moore have publicly stated that the series does not yet have the greenlight. What's more is that if they don't make a decision before the actor's contracts expire they'll either have to recast or renegotiate them. That would not be a good thing since most likely we would lose some of the actors that made the mini great. I would hate to see it without EJO as Adama.

On the other hand, even if this is true, both sides are pretty much obligated to deny it as rumor until they are ready to make an announcement. Right now I'm in the anticipate but don't expect mode.

Regardless of source, they gotta stop leaking information and let the higher-ups make the announcement.

Otherwise, you're feeding the hype and bring people's hope up, which can bring them down to the earth hard if the news turn out differently.

As for SCI-FI, either they reform their organization at teh core or simply shut down the network and let somebody more qualified to provide the kinds of programs we sci-fi/fantasy fans need.

The SciFi Channel isn't an intelligence organization, with such control over it's people to stop them from speaking without official sanction.

Well no, of course not. However, it isn't hard for them to ask people not to talk about things. Of course, they could always make them sign NDA's, like most companies do when they want something under wraps. Then they just fine or fire them if they are caught when they break the NDA.

It would be completely unprofessional for them not to make their employees sign NDAs. What's more is that the consequences can go far beyond simply being fired.

Yes, but NDAs are only so threatening as the private investigators you hire to make sure they aren't being violated.

The consequences can go farther than simply bring fired, yes. You can sue the violator of the agreement for damages. But does the individual have wealth on the order that it is worthwhile for the channel to pursue it?

Nor an organization full of high intelligence ... ability scores, that is. :p

As for NDA, you don't have to sign. But expect them to move you from working on that project to another. Of course, they usually pull out the NDA just before they hire you, much like a Prenuptial Agreement. ;)
