You seem to be misunderstanding Sci-fi's reason for having long mid-season breaks. They know that they're the small guys on the block, and that they can't compete with the stuff the big networks put out there (at least not ratings-wise). So instead, they try to show their stuff when the big boys are showing reruns, thereby getting better ratings.

You mean they didn't replace it with some crap movie about giant crocodiles/locusts/mosquitos/snakes/wolves/birds/etc? Or just decide
to dump the show and show more Stargate episodes?

Surely, there's got to be some way that they could have more Stargate
episodes...

Seriously, the idiots running this channel annoy me. At least they managed
not to shoot themselves in the foot by cancelling this show.

What I mean is that they don't really want more Stargate episodes. They don't want to put up Stargate and BSG against whatever it is the networks are pushing on Fridays. They know they'd get killed in the ratings, so they stick to the off-season where it's "safe".
