Game of Death

PCGen!

Green Slime is right, the latest iteration of PCGen gives decent descriptions of feats and does a pretty good job with prestige classes. You should take a look at it.

PCGen would actually be my preferred method for receiving character files. I could load up your file on my computer and check your numbers a lot easier than doing it by hand.

Thanks for the insight, guys, but I still think I'm going to sit that fight out. I much prefer "clever" character ideas, and this just doesn't sound like my cup.

I'm basically thinking along the lines of 6th level characters, with an emphasis on melee combat. Missile weapons and magic will be allowed, but I'll be taking some steps to curtail it a little bit.

The setting is a gladitorial arena in a nation that has been conquered by orcs. I haven't totally set the rules in stone, but they will be enforced by archers standing on the walls and, for flagrant violations, by a 20+ level necromancer. They may look something like the following.

1. Participants who stand still for longer than two rounds will be fired on by archers.

2. Participants who do not engage in some sort of combat for longer than 5 rounds will be fired on by archers.

3. Participants who make more than 2 consecutive ranged attacks, magical or non-magical, will be fired on by archers.

4. Participants who violate the rules will be subjected to a magical attack from the afore-mentioned 20+ level necromancer on the fourth violation.

5. Audience participation is encouraged and can influence the necromancer/judge's decisions.

As I said, these rules may or may not change as I get closer to my game. What do you guys think?

What do I think?

6th level sounds like a good level. Any particular reason for it to be a 20th level Necromancer? Anybody capable of Disintegrate wile do surely.

I presume that the standing still article is there to take care of those players that are "no-shows".

I think that you will find that there will be few magic users at all, with these restrictions on ranged attacks.

Audience participation, while nice in principle, could lead to a popular well-known poster gaining DM favour, with little or no effort.

While interesting, I think that this scenario will need serious restrictions to the magical items available to the participants.

In fact I might go so far as to suggest a complete ban on permanent magical items, in order to give the spell users some chance on the battlefield. The mage can lob two fireballs, but then must engage in combat!!

Just my spontatneous thoughts.

The reason for the 20+ level necromancer is that this GoD and the arena are in an actual location in my campaign world. The necromancer is one of the "big bads" from my campaign world.

I'm trying to keep a more gladitorial "feel" for my GoD. More along the lines of players hacking away at each other, jockeying for position and making surgical strikes. Less along the lines of them running around and sniping at each other.

Rule 3 may be a tad restrictive, and that's the one I was most likely to change anyway. I might replace it with a cap on ammunition, maybe 20 rounds total, and only allowing offensive ranged spells every other round.

I'm also considering adding wandering monsters wearing magic items: potions, wands and such. But I'm thinking that I may be complicating things unnecessarily.

Ok, have received EvilEyore and Sollir sent me a character checking them today. My DMs pick slot will be dropping Belaim and adding Mal2. Belaim doesn't quite have the time at the moment to play and Mal2 does. So, currently:

Dr. Midnight (need character)
Mal2 (need character)
Green Slime (approved)
Kitoy (approved)
Single malt (approved)
Agladan (approved)
Sollir (checking character)
Number47 (approved)
EvilEeyore (checking character)
Clockworkjoe (approved)

Hopefully, I can get this one started so, whoever wishes to start another can start anytime they wish. Also, I would like to see how this mess of misfits survives.

kitoy: I like the gladitorial theme! Will you be starting another thread for it? I'd like to play.

I wonder if more naturally mobile characters won't have a serious edge, though... a twinked sixth level monk with the right feats is going to play holy hell with a straight fighter.
