Gamers Slandered In NY Times

Well, Tsyr, the article isn't available anymore except to paying members, but here's my guess. The Marriott company does the booking for the whole chain, but the hotels are owned and operated individually. Sort of like a franchise.

I could be wrong, of course, since I've never worked in the hotel industry.

Actually, if it's in print, it's libel, not slander. And since all the Times did was quote William E. Wallace III, they did not (as the poster pointed out) commit libel, unless William E. Wallace III did not in fact say that, in which case they may have libelled him.

Not a lawyer. Later!

It's still in print, just log in and do a search for Dragon. Basically, the property owner is letting the Marriot corporation run his hotel. The property owner feels Marriot is not running his hotel properly and is scapegoating D&D cons in the hotel as an example of Marriot's mismanagement.

I guess people think they can still use D&D to push people's buttons. And to an extent, they are correct.

The NY Times...

To read articles on the NY Times site, you need to create a free account. This is, IMO, worth it, as the NY Times is, for better or worse 'the paper of record' -- or, perhaps, my sentiments are due to the fact that while I left there in 1992, I still consider New York City to be my 'home town'.

funny, noone seems to mind using the hotels that the porn convention uses in las vegas every year...... something tells me most people look at this from an economic perspective and old william wallace may just get knocked off his high horse by a certain windmill......

My thoughts, exactly, alsi...

There are far more outrageous and morally questionable cons held in hotels every year. There are the porn awards, of course, there are also various cons/shows devoted to various sexual fethishes. I know that there are S&M conventions/shows.

The man doesn't have a point, he's trying to create one. Perception is reality, true enough, though. Alas, the critical thinking skills of some may prevent them from seeing what a foolish statement this man uttered.

I talked to the hotel staff at the EverQuest Fan Faire in Baltimore. Maybe they were just buttering me up, but they said that the gamer crowd wasn't remotely bad. They have more problems with sport convetions or buisness convetions where guys have a lot to drink and then "blow off steam".

"Once you get those guys, you're not going to get the orthopedic surgeons convention," said William E. Wallace III, a lawyer at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy who represents Flatley."

Maybe we as a community should send Mr. Wallace a polite note letting him know that we're better then that, and that in 2002 broad generalizations like his should be a thing of the past, especially from an attorney.

Here is the address of the law firm if your intrested.

Someone shlould tell Mr. William E. Wallace III that,

"You can take our Gaming Cons, but you can NEVER TAKE.....OUR FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Sorry, sorry, sorry. I could not resist. :D
