Games Workshop and Roleplaying

I can remember when Games Workshop just had one shop and it was the ONLY place to get RPG stuff...

Those were the days, eh? Dalling Road, Ravenscourt Park, Hammersmith (I think they had a mail order centre in Uxbridge as well).

There was also Games People Play in Nottinghill Gate but that closed in the late 80's and was replaced by the Diana Cafe (like London needs another cafe!).

Yup, when I lived in London back in '89 I had to walk past it every day on my way to and from work :D .

GW did (and maybe still does) a game called Inquisitor which, I understand, is an RPG in all but name.

My reccommendation is not to get it. It is not a role-playing game, there are no non-combat related abilities, no good guidelines for creating characters of equivalent power, and the game mechanics are incredibly clumsy. Necromunda is ten times the small-squad miniature combat game Inquisitor is.

Well they have tried to release a role playing game on at least 2 occasions with WHFRPG and War-hammer quest. the first one is really good and the second one, was an attempt to use their miniature rules for rpg. I think the biggest problem is as the one poster pointed out, that they have no interest in RPG's . Plus with their love of money I don't; think any one could afford to buy a license form them :)

I've been trapped in the War hammer universe since 83

My group still plays WFRP. We were nuts about the game back in college. The WFRP rules are still one of my favorite game systems ever. Converting it to d20 rules would be fairly simple, I imagine, but why do it? You gotta love that critical hit chart!

The concept of d20 WHFRP has been bandied about several times and the thinking at GW seems to be

ABSOLUTELY NEVER EVER EVER!!!!

Which is too bad since Hogshead bailed and now the game will languish in a back closet of GW for who knows how long.

On the flip side, there have been some homebrew conversions of WHFRP to d20. Check out Yahoo! Groups for the d20WHFRP group.
