Gaming and Life in Nebraska?

Learn to love the Cornhuskers, that's their College Football team. It's a way of life for them, almost a religion. Other then that I know nothing.
I've worked for UNL for about half my life now. Football isn't my thing, but all the people it brings together is really quite cosmic.

Hmmm....rent for a two bedroom apt, depends on what you want. I've seen "Mostly college students live here" types average around $500. I've seen, "those that want a nice place, but can't afford a house-yet" run around $700. A month...that is.

$500? $700??

I wish it were that cheap, we're paying $1,030 a month for a 2 bedroom, 1
small office, and 2 bathroom apartment here in Miami, with $$$ increases
not too far off. Gas averages $2.10 per gallon, everyone on the road is
a moron with a deathwish, guaranteed.

Hmm, Nebraska looks good now... :D

A place like that might cost around $700 here in Lincoln...maybe $800 if the place was newer.

It might cost about $900 in Omaha...more if closer to the East Side...

Oh...Nebraska defeating any school in Florida...priceless.

:D

Cost of living: Hmm...I've give some examples:
12 pack of Bud Light Ice: average price-$10 Sam Adams: Six pack $7
Gallon of Milk-varies on brand-$2-3 dollars.
Pound of Hamburger: varies on brand just a couple of bucks.
Gas: One gallon-now $2

This is actually pretty much the same as Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, MI, where I've lived for the past 9 years. So are the apartment prices you quoted. I haven't done any formal research into cost of living in Lincoln, but I figured things would be cheaper than they are here. Hrm...

Could be worse. Here in DC, we pay 1030 for a 2 bedroom 1 bath, no office. And our apartment is a STEAL for the area. God...I miss my college days, where I could rent a 7 bedroom house for 1500/month. *sniffle*

LOL! So true.

The reason everyone thinks the state is flat is because they only part they usually see is along I-80, which follows the Platte River valley. Of course being a river valley makes it very flat. Outside the area around the Platte is mostly rolling hills (the Sandhills being the most well known).

As for gaming, I've lived in the Omaha area for a few years now and while I know a couple of people who game, I have yet to get involved with a gaming group. Lincoln being a university town (as mentioned above) probably has better prospects.

Oh, and you will learn to hate and loathe the Cornhuskers.

Hey JEL! If you can read this and you're looking for a gaming group, shoot me an e-mail. I can't use the e-mail or private message option on here. :(

Anyway, I live in Council Bluffs and our group meets once a week. Send me an e-mail at reveal(at)cox(dot)net if you wanna discuss this further. :D

As for Nebraska, I've lived in the Omaha area since 1996. I'm a military brat and was in the Air Force myself (Alaska before here). I've seen a lot of places and Omaha is one of them. ;)

It's an ok place to live. People are very friendly when you get out of Omaha but the people in Omaha are rude and angry. Not all are, of course, but I have met more than a few who were. That's a major reason we moved to Council Bluffs (in Iowa right across the Missouri river; could be considered a suburb of Omaha). Yeah, it's a hick town but the people are friendly and there are a LOT more hills, trees, anything "naturey" than Omaha. Omaha is expanding westward at an alarming rate. Everything in its way gets flattened. It's amazing how I can drive for an hour and barely see two trees because of all the "progress." :(

Edit: Oh... and let's not forget the Huskers. I've never seen more fanatics in a state than when it comes to the Huskers. It's funny because a group of us at work were discussing how the Huskers would run up the score on a team and, even if they were winning by more than 20 points, fans would be upset if they didn't score more. At that point, a rabid Husker fan entered the room and we asked her if she would be upset if the Huskers were up by 20 and took out the first string to put in other players. She said she would because "we need to score more points."

That seems to be the mindset. It's not ok to lose, it's ok to win but it's fantastic to humiliate your opponent and drive their face into the dirt.

That's why I love it when the University of Texas BEATS Nebraska every time they play in Lincoln. :]

What Reveal said is pretty much right on the money. I'm in Omaha and the people are pretty rude compared to other cities I have been in.

As far as gaming - White Wolf and Games Workshop is hugely popular. There are quite a few D&D 3.x groups here to, though I'm suprised at how many gamers are still playing 2e.

I run into new gamers almost every week it seems, and the FLGS (I've been to 6 of them so far just in Omaha) is always packed.

Only been to Lincoln a few times - People say its a smaller, cleaner Omaha :D
