It's been about twenty years since Gary worked on 1st edition, why do you assume he has the same outlook on games as he did back then?

No evidence to the contrary. Now, don't get me wrong, the 1e DMG has good advice about rules lawyers and useful miscellaneous rules, but my half-cocked judgement from a not terribly well studied DMG implies that he was too loose with the not easily avoidable deaths for my tastes too.
