Gary Gygax Movie?

At present I guess we get to recall Gary mainly for his writing, the games he ran at his house, some over-excitable shirts and a generous nature. Having never met him or read-up in detail that's the basic scan.

These elements are likely to feature well in a movie for 7-year-olds about dogs finding their way home across America, but ain't exactly Kickass.

The usual way to sell a biography is to screen out the life to magnify and polarise the more juicy bits. So, if someone is really going to sink $150m into a bio it seems highly unlikely we'll be left with the same impression as now.

Instead, I fear a Facebook creator movie torn between tiresome legal wrangling meets Ally McBeal drama and Jack Black and the DM's d20 of Doom.

Please tell me otherwise. (And I should note that it's certainly intriguing to see Xena Warrior Princess among the screenwriter's credits).

I agree with talien.

Paul Giamatti would be perfect for this.

I agree. Paul giamatti is a good choice. Hoffman is a great actor too, but he usually comes off as a little creepy. I bet eugene levy could pull it off as well.

I'll believe it when I see it. I am not convinced anyone would invest $150 million in a biopic about a fringe-hobby creator.

I love Paul Giamatti as an actor, though. He does some great work.

That is the old hollywood paradigm.

This could be made with a lot less money independently and sold as an arthouse film and be sent to the festival circuit or even better, give it to Terry Gilliam and it would be like his version of the Princess Bride... but with Gary and Dave Arnson sitting around a table making a game.

Trust me it would be awesome and full of win.

I don't know Umbran, they made American Splendor. It would be a perfect frame of reference for a movie about Gary. It doesn't always have to cost $150M to make a movie. American Splendor only cost $2M and it made almost four times that.

I know that AS is an exceptional movie, but it just goes to show that it CAN be done.
