Gary Gygax wrote in 1973: “From the map of the ‘land’ of the ‘Great Kingdom’ and environs – the territory of the C & C Society – Dave [Arneson] located a nice bog wherein to nest the weird enclave of ‘Blackmoor’, a spot between the ‘Great Kingdom’ and the fearsome ‘Egg of Coot’.”

It appeared on page 3 in the forward to Men & Magic, Vol. 1 of the original boxed set. This was well before any of the various and sundry legal troubles between the two men. If the EGG was named after Gygax, which both men deny, then it seems more likely a humorous homage. I think the more likely story is that grodog's link is correct.
