My Dad once told me that the more different cars you drive, the better driver you become. The same is true of DMing and different players. I love running new players, 'cause I keep learning stuff - and I can try DMing tricks that I wouldn't try at home. Even better, I've met more than a dozen really, really cool friends through this... and that doesn't suck, either.
In just the one game that I've DMed out of the confines of my own home, I learned a TON, so I'd have to agree. I'd absolutely love to run something for GenCon, but I'm just not sure if I could this year. Next year, when my friends and I will hopefully be going down to GenCon sans my mother *crosses fingers* I'm definately going to volunteer and judge as much as I can.

You could do it this year. Go for it! Just try a slot or two.

I had one really bad judge last year, who was supposedly an "experienced" judge. I also had some really good judges.

If you've got a decent grasp of the rules, understand the setting (or can wing it), some enthusiasm, and a fresh bag of Cheetos by your side, there's nothing you can't do. :D

How much familiarity would a judge need with the specific settings?
I don't think setting familiarity is as important as rules knowledge. If you don't know the rules, everything bogs down as you look things up. For RPGA mods, most of what you need to know about the setting is written directly into the module.

Of course, knowing the setting obviously helps. You can embellish the "flavor text" more easily if you know the world where the game takes place.

Barendd is absolutely right. :)

I just posted my schedule in the other GenCon thread. This year I'm running 7 RPGA games: Paranoia, Call of Cthulhu (twice), Star Wars, and two D&D games (one of them twice.) I can't wait!

Incidentally, I've changed the thread title to attract more interest. Sorry for any confusion!

Okay, here's the deal. If you live in the San Diego area, and you're going to GenCon this year, get in touch. Email or phone (619-234-9868). Be sure to let me know where you can be reached, and when the best time is.

I can't afford plane, train, or bus so car would be best. Since I don't drive, you get to. You and any friends who come along. (BTW, straight east to central Texas, then north through Oklahoma to Wisconsin would probably be best. Unless you absolutely have to see the Mississippi.)

I also don't have the money for lodging, but floor space will do.

Con entry: Gen Con will get to pay for it. (When I say "short funds", I mean it).

What Gen Con gets from yours truly: Two slots a day plus a stint at the diorama. I do ask that I get the modules the day before (if at all possible) so I can expand on the contents and put my own touches on it.

What the players get: A cruel, evil, nasty DM with a warped sense of humor and a fondness for odd characters. An entertaining time goes without saying.

If you're serious, get in touch.

FYI, you shouldn't have any difficulty getting the modules if you are signerd up as a judge and can view PDFs. (I found this out when I signed up and expressed the same 1-day before request.)

BTW, I responded to this post, and will be running 4 slots of Living Rokugan for the early sessions. Come play with me! :)

. . . . . . . -- Eric

PS -- I have two other friends who will be attending if they can find non-dorm housing. Anyone got any leads? One of them is the notorius Terry Hawkins of Houston RPG fame. ;)

Hurrah! Thank you - although bad things are going to happen to Morrus for changing the thread title. :D

We might have an extra room. I'll post here on the boards if we do.

And how am I ever supposed to make Paragon player level if I keep judging all the time? Hmm? I think this is a plot by Piratecat to keep me down...

Hey, Kevin -- do you know where folks can sign up for RPGA right now? I've just been wandering all around WOTC's web site, and I can't find a working link to a signup place. The FAQ says you can sign up at any RPGA-approved event, but I'd kinda like to judge at DragonCon (an Atlanta-based con), and I won't be at any RPGA-event before then.

Thanks!
Daniel
