Gate & Portal Help

It's not in the spell description, but I know for a fact that I read these basic 'rules' or elaborations in some source book. Can anyone tell me where these are?

-Gasses, liquids, heat, environmental effects, etc do not pass through to the other side. (i.e. a gate to the plane of fire cant burn you by proximity even if the gate opens under a lake of lava, nor can a portal to the plane of water cause a flood. If there is no atmosphere on the opposite side, it does not create a vacuum of any kind, nor could winds on one side affect the other side. It is a window and only a window however....)
-Creatures need only touch their side of the portal, and they appear on the opposite side. (Hence, their actual size is irrelevant to the size of the gate or portal itself)
-One cannot "reach" through a portal or gate, you can never be "halfway" or only partially through, but on one side or the other.
-You cannot attack or cast spells on things on the opposite side of a gate or portal.

Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.

Away from my books so can't tell you the page.

I believe the details you are refering to apply only to Portals, I think the Gate spell operates differently.

Gates/portals

The FR campaign setting says:

*Creatures that touch or pass through the area of the portal are transported.
*You can't poke your head through a portal and see what's on the other side.
*A portal only transports creatures that can fit through it.
*Unattended objects can't pass through a portal.

The Manual of the Planes says:

*Sentience is required to use a portal, so temperature, air, and energy don't pass through. Except 'natural portals'.
*You must physically pass through a portal.
*You can't see the other side.
*spells can't pass through portals.
*A creature must physically fit through a portal.

So not exactly what your remembering. From your description your having a portal/gate act like the Quantum Mirror from Stargate SG-1. Goggle it on You Tube for a nice 'portal like your describing effect'.

Hm I see.

Well at least there isnt much in the way of issues with Monster Size in my campaign. Seeing as how the ONLY Colossal Extraplanar creatures I can find are the Plague Brush (CR 17, MM3 124) and the Colossal Fiendish Monstrous Centipede (CR 11, SRD). Gargantuan creatures occupy a 20ft space, so even assuming they were "tall" (say 50ft) they could still fit the long way by crawling right through the horizontal portal.

Oh and I liked SG-1.

(Interesting to note that there are less than 20 outright collossal monsters in the game, albeit there are Gargantuan ones that could be advanced in HD.)
