Gate spells and PC's

Maybe a powerful being gave the 16th level wizard a scroll and said, "Call me if you need some help". Now he has these lousy adventurers when he was expecting a Deva.

Well, the wizard was 19th level, cast the spell himself, and it was disrupted by a "custom counterspell". The event I described served as the basis for a year-long game that recently ended (at its conclusion). The party witnessed a battle they would end up recalling several times over the course of their adventures. All the PCs were "outsiders", meaning they came from a different prime than the one they were gated to. It allowed me to continue an ongoing game with the same characters (if the players wanted) or bring in new characters.

Well, "Outsider" is a subjective term. An Elf would be an outsider on the elemental plane of air. Also, certain spells, I THINK its word of law/chaos, automaticly sends outsiders back to their plane of existance. It states, to my recolection, that it works on PC's that are not on their home plane.

Actually, Outsider is not a subjective term in the D&D language. It means a creature whose type is listed as "Outsider." However, the Gate spell itself does not specifically require the summoning of outsiders. Can anyone supply a quote (or even just a page number) from a source that backs up the assertion that only outsiders can be called or summoned? I was planning on having something like this happen in my campaign. In fact, my sorcerer has already gated in a rogue known to the party when we needed a lock opened.

Thanks!
