(Gauging Interest) Time for another RPG Design Contest?

Wik

First Post
Last year, we did a "Create your own RPG" contest. The idea was, you had a little over a month to produce a complete RPG that adhered to a list of themes (last year, the theme was "magic", so they're pretty broad). It was a very open, collaborative project - with everyone evaluating their competitor's work and offering helpful advice.

I was wondering how many people were interested in a repeat of last year's contest? Some thoughts:

* There would be a "theme", as in last year, as well as a few sub-themes that can be used or discarded as the RPG author wishes. My plan is to list about five themes, and twenty sub-themes, and randomly determine them.
* I would do the judging myself, based on a criteria I would release before writing began. That being said, I'd also be working on a project of my own - it just wouldn't be submitted in the actual contest portion.
* All projects would have to begin on the contest start date (probably January 1st) - you can't dig out "that old RPG I designed in the 80s" and submit it.
* the game must have fairly complete mechanics, and can't be simple re-writes of other systems. And you can't, for example, just say "this game uses 3e OGL rules, please see the hypertext SRD for game rules.... here's what I do differently!"
* Authors would have a month to get the project done. I'd recommend everyone post teasers of their projects weekly, though - even a table of contents or a few character classes can be a fun way to drum up discussion on your project.
* This would be an open design challenge - with a sense of community and collaboration, instead of hard-core competition. No one is going to mock you for your product.
* There will be (as of yet) no prize for first. But if someone is willing to donate something, that'd be awesome.

I would be into this - I recall the first one - I wanted to be involved but I was roaming around Europe during that time, but this time I'm home!

Count me in as a "I want to, and I might just have time to do it!"

Cool, we've got a few in! Groovy.

Any suggestions on other things to do would be greatly appreciated.

Probably a good idea, but not necessarily. For example, D&D doesn't really do that. You could really try to make a setting-less game, but you only have a max of 50 pages to do it in. And there will be a theme, which your game has to at least sort of incorporate.

*cough*

*BUMP*

Seems like there's less interest in the project this year. I wonder why?

The timing of the event happens to coincide with the annual RPG Superstar contest over at Paizo, so you are competing for the same type of participant. I'd suggest holding the contest at a different time of the year and/or do a bit wider advertising to attract participants.
