Geek Overcomes Social Anxiety By Turning Life into RPG

Although satire, I can imagine pretending real life is an RPG can lead to other (unanticipated) problems later in life. For instance, what if you totally blow it with the co-ed. In a CRPG you restore your saved game, no problem. In real life, you might be verbally jabbed or poked fun at (i do it to my friends all the time).

In any case, thanks for the link. I gotta find myself one of those attractive co-eds. I just hope I don't have to "restore my game". ;)

Wow are you guys saying that rolling my D20 vs DC 15 each morning to determine whether I can cope with the day isn't normal?

Oh and talking to attaractive co-eds is easy (in a pure RP encounter I'd only give it a DC 10 maybe DC 15 if I knew I'd be seeing her again):D:P

Talking to them is easy enough. but to do it without getting slapped, that's a real trick. Most beautiful co-eds have a high DC. Either they are very smart and know you are intimidated by them, or they are complete airheads and nothing you say has any impact on them.

So good luck. And come back when you reach 2nd level.

Vaguely on topic: I was terrified of public speaking until about 10 years ago. Then I had to deliver a talk on something-or-other to a huge group of students as part of a university class I was taking. I defeated my fears by pretending that I wasn't delivering a speech -- I was DMing to the crowd. I knew that I was subtly trembling the whole time, but everyone else was very impressed with how I'd carried myself.

I occasionally teach at the local university and I'm convinced that my DM'ing experience is invaluable. Not only has it given me the confidence to speak publically but it has given me the skills to handle a group who's concentration is lapsing and also developed my thinking on the fly skills.
