I just had an idea:

Live Game of Death. Remember the boards Game of Death? That, but live. I'd play in it.

Sounds like Gencon '04 is a must attend for me.

See, I like this idea. The last man standing could win a prize or something.

Let us not forget the fact that you wouldn't have to have the whole thing coordinated by rounds so the MDM could also run a group on his own if he wanted, although if a table blazes through their dungeon they might have to wait a bit for the rest to catch up.

The only question I see would be what worlds would you be allowed to come from; obviously the big 3(GH, FR, and DL), but what D20 worlds should be available, if any? I'm thinking Scarred Lands at the very least.

I'm so in. This'll finally get me up to GC. Man, this is gonna be a blast, whether or not it goes down the way we expect it. Cheers, Ashy! Great idea!

Ashy,
Now that Enk has chimed in, I'll throw my hat in the ring to aid in any way possible. I'm certainly not a writer, but I'd like to help with logistics however possible. One thing I can think of is that once the big concept is pinned down and a working model is on paper then it should be tested. I'm not sure how at this point, but that's why I'm suggesting it now. You do have a year to plan it out so it should probably be approached like any project. Create a project plan and then execute (in simple terms). Again, I'll help in anyway I can to help plan if you so desire.

I can understand wanting to keep it simple, like a large group of hero's fighting a slew of orcs. But if you are going to have as many players as people here are predicting, why not take advantage of that? Even if it is a scenario like Hero's vs. Orcs, why not let some of the players actually play the orcs?! That would actually make it easier for the DMs (at least I would think so). Instead of handleing all of the npcs, they'd handle the peons and act more as referee.

Chiming in, this has the potential to be a really great idea.

I think that we should keep it somewhat focused on ENworld instead of a wholly make-believe scenario. At least have some standard EN tropes sprinkled throughout like:
  • An elderly, well-mannered grandmother who won't take no guff (w/ purse of smiting +1)
  • Furry feline pirates!
  • Hot italian beef!
  • Monstrous Squirrels named Nutkin
  • Etc. Although, the cheese factor can be lowered. :)

I definitely will need to change my plans for next year. After having grown up in Milwaukee and getting to go every year, I do miss it. DragonCon just isn't the same.

Also, I'd prefer not to have some 40 person battle royale or a stylized tournament. Maybe it's just me, but plenty of these are already in existence. I prefer the many group format where everyone meets up at the end (w/o the final battle die-rolled out).

It would also be cool, if every group was playing a different part of one overall story. This may be tough to plan beforehand, though. Maybe a story could be developed where the number of players and groups doesn't need to be known beforehand. That way if attendance at such an event grows or shrinks, the event still can be run as is. (all you need is enough DM's to cover every group).

I would suggest a single time event, too. This gives everyone plenty of notice on when and where to be. Also, one evening (however long) won't take time away from everything else at the Con.

I want to be involved with this as well. Designing this could be a lot of fun.

TB's suggestion of scenes is an excellent one. It allows rounds and DMs to to run at different paces and have catch up periods.

You could also set up a max time limit for each scene to stop a group who went way OT and boggled their DM's mind from slowing everyone else up.

This also allows people to switch tables and groups (meet more people) for different scenes. I think this is essential.

I also love the time specific events (Volcano, battle breaking out, etc)

I think the best time and place to do this would be at Clay's (Mark) brother's bar on Sunday. People who die can eat drink and be merry and watch the rest unfold. Location can be very flexible.

This really can't be incorperated with the ENNies because they take place on Friday.

A one day (4-8 hour) event should be long enough otherwise it is getting too big and too hard to work in people's schedules. Night time may be the best time if we want to go longer.

I also think pregen characters might be best. But if people are set up with perameters, I trust we would get honestly created characters.

I don't want to DM (I am not a rules nut), but would love to help referee and organize this.

Just a quick update - I am talking with Pkitty about this and things are looking positive - I will let you all know as soon as I do. :)

No! People that die join the DMing team! No one stops playing unless they want to!
