Gen Con Indy Improvements!

My biggest complaint over last Gencon is actually pretty easy to fix:

restock the vending machines more quickly. Ensure this is done so they are well stocked for the night.

For those of us who went to play pick up games and boardgames in the main hall in the evening, it was aggravating to have all the vending machines empty.

Pick up gaming at Gencon is a great feature of the con. It's people who don't know one another who are EAGER to play with one another and try something new.

Leaving these things empty is just leaving cash on the table. Get it together and get the things restocked more frequently.

Plus at least one of my kids will be with me again this year, maybe all 3. I don't keep them blind to the realities of people drinking and getting drunk, but seeing people under those circumstances isn't why I, or my kids, are there.
My sons are 17 and 12. They both started attending GenCon at age 6.

Anyway, yeah, we're not big fans of hanging out with shouting drunkards (though it can be amusing for the first 10 minutes or so).

Pay the Colts so they have their preseason game on a different Sunday. The hilarity of the most bizarre mixing of gamers in wizard hats with drunk football fans aside, it really is a mess downtown that day with people everywhere and lines at the various restaurants for hours.

I know it will never happen, so I'll still wear my "If you ain't a Steelers fan, you ain't s***" jersey and laugh at all the people who want to tear my throat out. Good times! :p

I also thought it was pretty fuuny to see all the gamers and Colts fans downtown. Some of the looks people were giving the gamers were priceless. It was pretty crowded. Over all I can't wait for this year's show. I just hope I have enough money. I went a little crazy in the exhibitors hall last time I went. I spent almost $1000. I don't know if that is a lot or average.

The weekend for GenCon is set years in advance. The Colts preseason schedule, OTOH, is set during the spring. Since the Colts play 2 road preseason games as well as 2 home preseason games, in theory, you'd think it'd be a 50/50 chance that they'd be out of town during GenCon. And, since the team does have some say on their schedule, you'd think they'd clue in and not schedule a game on top of a major convention next door to their stadium, causing hotel and parking headaches for their fans.

I think they already have learned their lesson; the only year a preseason game was the same day as GenCon Indy was 2004 (I remember, because I was excited that they were playing the Jets, so I bought tickets for the game). You' be surprised how many gamers were at the football game that night - it was just too convenient not to go. (I still remember the guy in the Stormtrooper outfit with Colts-blue clothes underneath, rather than black, and waving a Colts flag...)

Count me as a "Yes" vote for having a preseason game during GenCon - purely for selfish reasons. :) I admit that the locals may not like the idea as much, though...

What do they care as long as they are makin money.

The Colts? They care because it ticks off their fans when they plan on coming to a game, and can't get a hotel room, can't get a parking space, can't get into a restaurant, etc.

And, as it's a preseason game, it doesn't necessarily sell out, so factors like that may play a big role in whether or not people are willing to buy game tickets.

I love preseason football. The Colts definitely played the Bears at home during GenCon Indy 2005 because I went to the game. I can't remember if they were playing at home for GenCon 2006 though.
