Badges purchased, room reserved . . . I'm driving this year to avoid outrageous airline security.
It's a blast and the biggest event of the year for my wife and me. Five nights with no children and the only "responsibility" being to show up to games: AWESOME.
My single recommendation for a first timer: do NOT overbook yourself. Schedule no more than 4 hours of games each day to give yourself plenty of time to wander around and drop in on things you didn't expect or know about.

Got badge and room at the Embassy Suites. I'll be there. This'll be my 25th GenCon in 27 years.

This will be my 2nd GenCon. Got my badge and hotel early as possible this time. Definitely resolve to actually play some games this time... spent the whole weekend in the dealer room my first time. Not bad, but ever since I've felt like I went to an exquisite restaurant and only ordered an appetizer.

Not this year. 
The friends I usually go with won't be going and I'm not in a position to be going by myself. So I'll be saving my money for an extra awesome time next year, and someone else will have to go and have fun in my place.

I haven't ordered my badge yet (need to do that soon) but the hotel is booked! We're staying at the penthouse of the Embassy Suites!
I didn't go last year after having gone to the previous four and I missed it a lot (even though I made up for it by visiting a bunch of ENW friends along the east coast including Piratecat). So I'm really excited about getting back this year.
My one bit of advice is to pack your schedule with as much stuff as humanly possible. Play five or six games a day. Eat unhealthy food in the 15 minutes between games. Drink a lot. Sleep very little. Rest up the week AFTER GenCon.

Seriously though, the way I tackle GenCon is not for everybody. I've discovered that every year I go I spend less and less time in the dealer hall and more time hanging out with the friends I only get to see once in a while. I think I spent about 45 minutes total in the dealer hall last year.
Official Games: Never played one. I only play and run games with ENW/CM folks and I wouldn't have it any other way. The quality of these games is just astounding and there is no better way, in my opinion, to learn to become a great GM while having the time of your life than gaming with these people. I highly recommend it.
Also, make time to drop in and hang out at some of the parties thrown at the Embassy (I have a pretty strong feeling that the one on Wednesday night will be in the penthouse). You might even get to meet BrentNall (and his wife is SMOKIN' hawt).

Haven't gotten my badge yet, but I did get a room reserved before the block went on sale from the GenCon registration block. I learned that lesson last year. Got a suite at the Holiday Inn...which SEEMS closer in distance to the actual convention center than the place we stayed last year.
Can't wait, as it both a gaming weekend of fun as well as mini reunion with friends from around the country.
