GenCon could take a lesson here!

Sounds like a recipe for disaster. . .

My group doesn't drink at all. Of the 5 adults I play with, I drink the most at about one beer/margarita per month average. I'm now curious. Someone should start a poll around drinking and RPG. I might, but I'm more of a lurker and not so adept at this posting thing.

No thanks. Nothing against alcohol, but adding alcohol to the funk is not a good thing. The very people most likely to drink it in large quantities are those guys who have no hotel room, no money for food, and who are just trying to stay up for 72 hours straight of gaming and crash on couches or the floor where they can find them, with no showering or changing of clothing. Those are not the guys you want consuming mass quantities of cheap beer.

There was a thread about this roughly a year ago. Not a poll, if I recall correctly, but I remember being surprised at how few of the posters drink at all; and many of those wouldn't even consider playing with folks who drink at the table, no matter how little.

Yeah, the only thing worse than having to listen to some nerd talk about his level 35 evolved paragon half-dragon monk vampire necromancer at a CON is to hear it from a drunk nerd (and then throw up on your shoes).

Beer = good
Beer and nerds -> I'll pass.

I have the feeling that GenCon would not be able to afford free booze. This con likely can because it's small. GenCon, with it's 25K+ attendees, likely would be renting a Budwiser bottling plant to supply their con goers.

And if it's Bud more attendees would be turned away than gained. That stuff is pure swill. It makes Foster's Lager look good.

::shrug:: I'm not so sure.

This might be one case where typical low-test American beer would be just the answer - you can swill it back for hours and never really get all that drunk. :)

Chatacon

Hi,

I went to Chatacon in Chattanooga for years. They have a HUGE Con-Suite with really good snacks and all you can drink beer. The Beer could not leave the Con Suite.

Very few problems. Occassional drunk, but they had more than enough staff to handle it. I never saw anything get out of hand.

A far bigger problem was someone left part of a costume in an attached parking garage. It was a canister with a radioactive lable on it. The can was found by someone who did not realize there was a Sci-Fi Con next door and called the police. The police came within a hairs breath of closing the hotel, and the Hotel subsequently opted out of holding the Con thereafter.

But anyway, Beer at a Con, is generally a fun thing, with proper staff and planning.

No thanks. Not that I've been to a con yet (mostly financial reasons, it'd be nice to go some year), but a policy like that would guarantee I never go. Not just being around all that alcohol, but the idea that part of my ticket price paid for it.

You want to drink booze, do it on your own dime!
