D&D 5E Gencon release?

"Too many books are bad for the game!" "I hate the Forgettable Realms!" "Another Realms campain book full of lore will add to the confusion of gamers old and new!" *multiple shake fist*

Had to do it.

Anyway, in his tweet Mearls mentioned kickstarter. If Ed Greenwood announces the kickstarter at GenCon, it probably means it will start a month later. The fund raising campain itself will probably last another month. That would mean 60+ days before any element of Rage of Drizzt gets released. Cross-branding release mean lots of strain on the wallet and RoD would compete directly with the kickstarter campain.

So I'm thinking either RoD is a later November/early December release or the FR campain book isn't due this year. I do wonder how it will work. Is the Sword Coast off limites and Ed can do about anything with the rest? Does Ed talk to Perkins for each region of the FR? If so, has this already happened/is happening or will this start after the kickstarter campain, meaning its release could take a lot of time since Perkins has so little time already (but he does now have help from SKR)?

What tweet? I didn't know anything about WotC even considering to allow a kickstarter for a FRCS...

Ask and you shall receive. http://www.enworld.org/forum/content.php?2538-The-Realms-WILL-Be-Updated!#.VVSdqPl_Oko

And for the link aversed, the Mearls speakth so:
"if WOTC isn't interested in updating the realms would corporate allow kickstarter drive to let Ed Greenwood do it?"

Of course, this is not officially announced. So take it with lots of salt. Its gonna be hammer time, cause I'm gonna mention the OGL and PDFs and compare Mearls' tweet to Perkins mentioning those two things.

*Althought very recently on Paizo's boards, Vic Wertz said that when they were still publishing Dungeon mag, when an issue that contained one adventure set in one paticular setting (never mentioned), sells for that issue drop noticeably.

Curious. You're sure it was one specific setting caused the drop, rather than just the magazine specifying a setting for the adventure? (That is, you're sure it was "all InsertNameHere adventures cause a drop", rather than "any adventure than names a setting causes a drop"?)

If it is indeed one specfic setting, it would indeed be very interesting to know which one - though I expect we never will. :)

If the name of that setting was on the cover of the mag because one of the three adventures was set in that setting. Here is the quote:
This isn't just some "story." When Wizards bought TSR, Lisa was assigned the task of figuring out why TSR was in in such dire straits that they *needed* to be bought. She collected sales data on pretty much every significant product TSR ever published, interviewed former and then-current employees and distributors, and Wizards did the largest survey of gamers ever done in the industry. She managed to pull together data that even TSR execs didn't have access to when they were running the company. And all this data showed that every new campaign setting split the market more than it grew the market.

And this wasn't just historical—we saw it happen in front of our eyes while we published three adventures in every issue of Dungeon magazine. If we published a Forgotten Realms adventure, Greyhawk players would complain they couldn't use a third of the magazine, and vice versa. And, as I've mentioned before, there was one particular campaign setting (which I won't name) that, if we put its name on the cover of the magazine, it would guarantee that we'd sell fewer copies of that issue that the issues before or after it, even when more than 2/3 of the magazine had nothing to do with that setting.
This should lead to the post: http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2s7w3&page=6?I-believe-Hasbro-will-be-the-downfall-of-DD#284

We know it isn't Greyhawk, as they did so many APs in there. Eberron was on a lot of covers. Not so sure the FR name was on the cover of a lot of issues.

Oh, I have already seen that, but to me it seems that someone tweeted the text you quoted as a question, and Mearl's answer was ''who sez we aren't updating it?''

Thanks for the link, though.

Yeah, a bit like Perkins' "when did we say the FR are the default setting?". But he did mention kickstarter and Ed Greenwood. That is a bit more detailed. Anyway, we'll see.

Haven't heard anything, but my gut feeling is "no" - if they were going to release something, they'd have announced it by now. I may be wrong about that, of course. :)
We didn't hear about the PHB until well into June last year. They didn't confirm Princess of the Apocalypse until February.
We might not know about a GenCon product until as late as July.

But I expect something, even when no books were coming they still managed Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle.

There'll certainly be something, but I'm skeptical it'll be something that's not already on our radar. My bet is it'll either be an announcement for something else due late 2015 or early 2016, or early copies of Out of the Abyss for Gencon attendees.
