General Core Class

Crothian

First Post
One of the PCs in an up coming campaign is looking for a fairly general core class to start off as. He might end up multi classing a lot as his character doesn't know what they want to do. So, I'm looking for interesting core classes from all around d20 fantasy for him to look at. Any one have some suggestions?

Does he want a general core class as in "a little bit of everything"? If so, then I would say bard.

Does he want a general core class as in "really easy to remember what it does"? If so, I would recommend fighter.

The character is going to be like the Grey Elves, the race is a modified version of that. He is actually a reincarnation of a another character unbeknost to them. So, the character has a feeling of missing something, and will be multi classing and doing a lot of soul searching for who they are. The character can be spellcasting, just not to much, some martial, and some sneaky. The idea is the character doesn't really know what he is or where he belongs. Basically, the character will slowly realize that they are actually living a half life and need to figure out what they were previously to feel complete. I know there are many core classes out their beyond the core books, so I was hoping to find one that fit the idea of a little bit of everything or something like that. A bard uses to be like this, but they are more minstral magic people and that really doesn't fit.

So, I know this isn't the easiest of things and so I came here!! :D

So what you're looking for is sort of a 'generic adventurer' class, a true jack-of-all-trades?

If you've got access to Arcana Unearthed, you might try the Akashic - no spellcasting, but he could be remembering skills and stuff from his past life rather than tapping into the 'akashic memory'.

EDIT: Of course, if you don' t have AU you probably don't know what an Akashic is. Viciously cutting and pasting from Monte's Design Diary:

Akashics
Filling the role of the skill-user, the akashic is probably the strangest class in the book. The name comes from the "akashic memory," an actual concept from the real world. The idea is that all knowledge and experience of all conscious beings is collectively stored together somewhere. In Arcana Unearthed, then, the akashic is able to tap into this collective memory to gain knowledge. While he has many skills of his own, he can use this ability to improve his own skills or use skills he's never had any training in. He can also use it to improve his combat abilities, or gain general knowledge about topics. He can even use it to investigate other people's specific memories so fully that he becomes a master of impersonation. This character is so flexible and customizable that no two akashics will ever be alike -- each can even choose his or her own class skills.

The akashic is in the game for the person who wants to play a character who's a little different. Interestingly, you can design an akashic to be a specialist, taking all related skills and using the special abilities to augment them, or to be a generalist, taking a lot of different skills and using abilities to do even more different things.

That sounds perfect for what we are looking for. I'll have to borrow Arcana Unearthed from a friend to see what it's all about, but I think it shall work nicely. Thanks!!

Definately agree with the choice of the Akashic. I have been just starting to read through the AU and was actually trying to think of how I would use the Akashic in a normal game. This character concept actually seems perfect for the idea, though you may have to tweak a few of the abilities as many of them allow for a "revolving" access to knowledge. Good luck and let us know what you decided on.
