If I remember correctly, Joe the Bartender will hold items for safekeeping for adventurers, possible for a small fee. Am I correct or just delusional?

I remember that as well.

Someone mentioned having a spare spellbook at the RDI. Was it you, Manzanita? Do you recall if you paid Joe, and how much?

Iggy has two backup spellbooks stored at the RDI. (or maybe just one.) I finagled this, as it can be quite useful for a wizard to have a backup spellbook. I don't remember if I got this idea from someone else, but if Joe offers free room and board, and, talk about expensive, free alcohol, to adventurers, then a little free storage doesn't seem unreasonable. It might be a different story if you were storing all sorts of crazy stuff. Iggy was just storing a book.

As PCs advance in level, they do tend to accumulate stuff, and have the ways and means to have a base. This is one of the reasons I offered the bases I did at the end of my Monemvassia campaign. Storing stuff at Joe's is fine, I think, for the poor and inexperienced adventurer, but as PCs rise in levels and they accumulate more stuff, they ought to get their own place I think.

I'm just looking for one of my characters to stash a magic item for a couple of days and since we're in Orussus Joe came to mind.

Paging El Jefe, paging El Jefe.

Yeah, holding is usually a good idea unless you have a Handy Haversack or two--the mayor just offered the party free holding services and to take care of their horses for them in Crux of the Matter, for instance.

I should just make you role-play it out, but yes, Joe will let you store a "certain round object" at the RDI.

To give you a concrete example, at the end of Treasure of the Tierra Padre, my elf, Oirhandir walked into the RDI and promptly got recruited for an adventure. No biggy, I thought, by the time this thing takes off, I'll have the XP and loot distribution from TotTP. But Bront was in a little hurry, and from the post where my character entered the RDI to the post where he was on the road with the party was less than 48 hours real time. Pbartender, the TotTP DM, didn't post XP and loot until Bront's Festival of Halina party had left. So Iggy, Manzanita's halfing wizard who was on TotTP hauled Oirhandir's share of the loot to the RDI (that made sense, since our employer in TotTP insisted on a contract in which he got all the loot, and we got shares of coin based on how much loot we brought in). Joe kept the loot for Oirhandir at Iggy's request, and letters were sent by courier to the FoH party explaining the situation to Oirhandir and listing what Oirhandir had now recently "acquired" that was stored in the RDI.

To make it more interesting, Oirhandir needed some cash during FoH, and "sold" the letter of credit to his TotTP "stuff" to an NPC. The NPC was based in Orussus, so at the end of FoH, that NPC simply went to the RDI, showed Joe the letter, and made off with the stuff that Oirhandir had sold him. (The transaction between Joe and the NPC happened off-stage, but everyone was satisfied with this way of handling things.) So Oirhandir got to head out early without losing his stuff, Iggy got to do what he wanted to do without being burdened with schlepping around Oirhandir's stuff, Oirhandir got the benefit of being able to sell his ToTP stuff for gain even though it never was physically in his posession, and the NPC got the benefit of a profitable transaction in the town of Covington without the burden of schepping his gains back to Orussus...all because Joe was willing to perform this small service for the group.

I'm sure he'd take one silly heavy round thing for safekeeping...provided it wasn't some sort of magical bomb or something.
