General Discussion

I haz question:

Is magic a language unto itself? Or is spell casting expressed through the language of the caster, whatever it may be? (Or something else?) I know there can be different versions of spells.

The significance of the answer effects how I line up a character idea, I think I can handle however it works to the concept, but want to make sure it's in line with the world.

I think its draconic.

edit: This is what I have for my wizard, Heinrich:
Common, Draconic, Dwarven, gnome, Terran, Auran and Ignan.

For prepared casters, I can imagine it being perhaps relegated to Draconic or Sylvan (or some lost, forgotten language that exists today only in terms of spells), but for the spontaneous, I would think it could be most anything related to their casting background, or however they decide to fluff it up.

I don't think RAW has anything to say about what the specific language of magic is, other than spells with verbal components have some kind of language, and other than specific spell-stealing abilities, you can't just learn a spell by hearing it, etc. I've always liked folks fluffing / styling their magic to fit their characters, and don't see any real impact on gameplay in doing so. I play a druid in a non LPG game whose spells are often meant to mimic natural sounds rather than discernible words, for example. Sometimes they speak "unrecognizable syllables," sometimes they just point and snipe at unseen critters like Nathan did. So long as you're not trying to modify the effects in some way, I think you can probably make it work however you like.

Thanks for all the responses, it was good to get the feel from several people, actually.

I couldn't find anything about this issue in the rules, either. I was also making sure there wasn't some LPF overlay I was unaware of. I'm not after any particular mechanical effect, but rather just wanted to know so I would be able to present the background properly.

It does seem quite a few other casters are using Draconic, which is fine. It could be viewed as 'the norm', for purposes of whether a new character is adhering to or diverting from said norm. Rule #1 of building a unique snowflake: Know when you're building a unique snowflake. :)

Sorry to intervene but I'm back. I have a terminally ill family member which is the reason for my original disappearance. Things are finally calming down now however and I can hop back into Pathfinder.

After some thought I've decided to retire Orion since I no longer feel a sense of attachment to him and lost the original vision for his future progression through the world of En. I've decided to create a ranger from Rhat'matanis to replace him.

I'm sorry things have been hard for you, Disposable Hero. It is good to have you back.

I thought I'd mention that Rodents of Unusual Size, pt 3, is for APL 2 and has been approved and is launching soon. Whichever character you feel most comfortable with (ranger or paladin are both fine choices), we can fit him in and get you up and running quickly, if you like.

Take your time. I know this is a tough time. I personally am thank you for letting every one know

I will be taking an hiatus from LPF from now until hopefully no later than the end of the summer. Real life demands are draining my energy to the point where I cannot participate at a level that is fair to the others here. Hopefully once my finances are in a better spot and I don't need to work basically every day, I will be able to come back.
