General video game discussion

I just finished playing Spider-Man (Remastered), Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Spider-Man 2. They were fairly enjoyable games with some pretty amazing boss fights. The only real flaws were some of the fights with goons got a little tedious and overall the games are too easy on regular difficulty.

I am trying to figure out which CRPG from my backlog to tackle. The nominees are:
Baldurs Gate 3 (I have about 20 hours in this from a year ago and would restart with an intent to complete it)
Expedition 33 (I know, this is more of a JRPG)
Dininity OS 2 (I have like 8 hours in this from forever ago and would start totally fresh)
Drova (I started this; it felt hard)
Mirthwood (I don't even know when I bought this)
Rogue Trader (it looks good but complicated)
Solasta (I boiunced off early but mostly because of how it looks)
Temple of Elemental Evil (nostalgia ho!)
Wildermyth (I wanted this game for the generational stuff)
Wizardry 1 remake (because I hate myself?)

So, do you have any thoughts on any of those?

Unfortunately, I've drifted away from CRPGs, so most of those I know only by reputation; I own and played Solasta for a while, but drifted out of it (not a particular critique of it, it was for the same reason I haven't finished a CRPG in years). I've seen a lot of really positive buzz about Expedition 33.

Temple of Elemental Evil, but install Circle of Eight and Temple Plus

It’s great. I have a lot of minor gripes (mostly related to the fact that I wish it had more Baldur’s Gate and less DOS2 in its DNA) but the overall package is fantastic
Rogue Trader (it looks good but complicated)
Good writing, interesting companions, and the comically grim sci-fi setting made a nice change from my usual fantasy fare. It is indeed very long and complicated, though generous enough with respecs that if you screw up your build it isn’t a huge disaster.
Solasta (I boiunced off early but mostly because of how it looks)
It’s a 5E combat simulator, and a pretty good one too. I thought it looked fine, though I do remember some moaning about the faces.
Wildermyth (I wanted this game for the generational stuff)
I enjoyed the combat and generational stuff, but I found the writing pretty hit and miss. I think they were aiming for “mystical and profound”, but about half the time hit “confusing and twee” instead. That’s a minority opinion though.

I would rate BG3 ahead of DOS2 purely on the basis that Rivillon is a terrible setting.

I found Rogue Trader a bit depressing, but I quite like the space combat minigame.

Solasta is narrative donkey piss, but it's more faithful 5e combat than BG3. Graphically, it's acceptable, and won't break your GPU. It's relatively short, so you could play it then move on to one of the others. The first expansion pack is terrible, but the second is quite good.

Wildermyth is fun at first, but gets dull and repetitive after a while.

Haven't played the others.

One issue with playing a single game so much over the weekend, my brain currently has a perfect rendition of the BG3 battle music running on a loop in the back of my head.

Yeah I played as an Iconoclast and most things went my way (as well as they can in the grim darkness of the far future), but my capital city got eaten by genestealers and my elf girlfriend ditched me and got killed by an overzealous tech-priest, because I didn’t make the perfect choices.

I decided to go with Solasta mostly because I had not really played it at all and I wanted to give it a honest go. Even just a couple hours in I really like the verticality it gives 5E combat, and how it is more faithful than BG3 and less focused on barrels.

It is laughably bad writing, graphics and voice acting though. Hoo boy.

Speaking of old games like MMO2 - what ever happened to the Commander Keen series? Does anyone even remember that? I am not really sure I'd want to play Jump & Run games, but that's a 'property' that hasn't been used in forever.
