Generation Legacy Issue #11 Cont'd

"Your only mistake was giving me a chance. I like you. I care about you. I want you around me and in my life. I want everything to be like you wanted it to be, but you deserve better than me. You're too good of a person," Mark sadly concluded.
Star shrugs, “Maybe you can watch the sunset with me. I don’t want you to leave; the team needs you and your friends would miss you. You should stay, this is your home now. People make mistakes it is part of the human condition, and so is forgiveness, Mark.”

“Just promise to never do that again,” she adds, "not to me, not to anyone."

Mark looked up at the sun, not feeling the tropical heat. He didn't answer.

“Just promise to never do that again,” she adds, "not to me, not to anyone."

"You are a better person than me. Never again." Mark affirmed, sitting down to watch the sunset with Star.

Man that sucks. I track down Cassie...well, with a lot of help, and probably identify a major Pantheon stronghold or whatever, and that's all I get? I didn't want my job to stop there. I mean, I don't need to breathe! I guess he needs to make a plan first, then Legacy can try and help Cassie and arrest the bad guys.

"Alright," Ryan says as he leaves. Hey, at least this means Tina's chances of making it increased. That's good news. He quickly flies towards the cafeteria, settling into a seat opposite of Tina. As he is seated, he pops a stick of chewing gum into his mouth. "So, the boss gave us his thanks and congrats, but nothing else. I was really hoping we could move on the intel, but I guess that's a move for later. Anything new in this part of the world?"

Karen smiles at the image he paints, "Of course not yet silly," she whaps him on the head with the pillow, "I've still got like college to finish... I'm not gonna make the same mistake as mom, she had John when she was still in school. She still graduated fine but I don't think it was easy... I'd like to graduate first, and of course save the universe from Overseer and you know all that fun stuff normal teenagers like us do," she jokes, sitting crosslegged across of him, "And maybe practice a bit more... I've really enjoyed our first 'sessions'.

Tin shrugs, “Nothing new here,” she glances over to Charlotte’s table, “well I am sure that the boss will have a plan for us soon, and we can go in get Cassie. I just don’t think she is in good hands wherever she is. That Tommy kid just sounds like a creep to me.”

She changes the subject, “So… what did you talk to your ex about?”

Karen

Kal lies back down on the bed with an exasperated sigh, “Oh boy,” he chuckles, “we have all the time in the world.”

“I hope Gilden finds something useful, we could use some good news right about now. I mean we all could use anything positive to take our minds off how negative everything seems. I know it would clear up the sick feeling I have in my stomach,” he says.

Mark

Star puts her hand on Mark’s, she does not squeeze just places it there, “You like you’re swimming, and I like sunsets. I think I like them because they signify the end of one thing, and the start of another. Although the sun isn’t actually going anywhere, its still there just out of sight. I always found that curious.”

"I hope so too..." Karen lays down beside him, resting her head against his shoulder, "Since Yoshi died we've been going from bad to worse, I think it's really getting to everyone. Anika's under a ton of stress, Mark didn't look to be doing much better earlier. Cassie left. Kelly's gone who knows where, at least she's safe... We really could use some sunshine soon..."

Charlotte felt, rather than saw, Tina turn to glare at her. She wondered what the other girl's problem was, if she was actually angry at her for coming between her and Ryan, if only a little bit. Ryan seemed pretty happy about the whole deal and she definately didn't want to get between them. She liked Ryan, but not that way, anyways. Not wanting to be target practice for Tina's dagger-eyes, Charlotte got up from the table.

"Excuse me for leaving so soon after you guys came, but I need to head out. Sami, if you feel that you need someone to help you on campus, feel free to come and get me or leave me a message."

Charlotte makes her way out of the cafeteria, then prompts SARAH, asking her where Shao-Lin is. She hadn't seen her friend all day and wanted to know where he had disappeared off to.

(Could I burn a hero point for some type of useful knowledge for the future sometime during her meeting with Shao-Lin?)

"No...I know that they aren't done, I wanted to talk to both of them. I guess it can wait though." she says, frowning. "Umm...I guess you can take me on a tour of this place since it might be a home for soo many Elites soon, I'd like to be familiar with it." The blonde tells Smith frowning at the door for a moment, before turning and smiling at him, and offering him her arm so that he could gide her on the tour.

"So how big is this place? I mean how many people can stay here at one time without it actually getting crowded or having a hard time with getting food or whatever?" she asks. "How does this place get food at all, I don't think you can just go to a super-market around here...does Tommy have Aerodyne's or boats bringing in supplies? Or maybe just fish I guess but that could get boring."

Cassie stepped into the well fortified kitchen, it had enough automation to make any smart house she'd heard of look absolutely prehistoric. She paused by the food dispensory and tapped though a variety of stock options. As she noted the material on hand, she tapped a few, pausing to pull up a recipe from the touch screen as well. She nodded as she noted that everything she needed was on hand and tapped in another request for the items to be dispensed.

A moment passed before the dispenser hummed and opened to reveal a small pork tenderloin, some shrimp, spices, peppers, rice and vegatables. She smiled as she collected them and walked over to the counter to prepare the meal.

Two years earlier, Atlanta Georgia

"No no Cassie." Malcom Prophet, Atlanta PD Captain of Detectives and newly adoptive father, took the knife from his ward and eased her aside. "You clean and cut the tenderloin like so." he says as he shows her, putting the chunks into the waiting marinate. "And now we turn to the shrimp and tomatoes."

Turning he nods as she looks at him, then resumes stirring the simmering mix of shrimp and stewed tomatoes. "Good girl." he says with a grin, it was nice to see the quiet girl trying to do somthing. She could field strip anything in the police station armory, but he had discovered outside of how to react to threats or use a weapon she was pretty much a blank slate. "You keep that up and you'll have no problem getting the boy of your dreams" he teases her, then stops as he takes in her blank look. "Don't worry, that will make more sense later on. How is the rice coming."

"Quite well sir." she says in her quiet formal voice. He could almost hear the stiffness in her spine as she snapped to attention then relaxed before he could check.

The Here and Now

Cassie smiled as she recalled that first night with Malcolm. She was still not too confortable with most people, her lack of social skills made it hard for her to communicate well she thought. For example with Ryan, but she had learned a lot from her foster father. The big bear of a man was the one who introduced her into reading and thinkign for herself. His family musuem was impressive, going back to the first free family members back in the 1750s and how the family had grown and evolved in the years since.

He had taught her a lot, shapping her to be someone who looked to do the right thing as he did. She knew he didn't always agree with her, but their conversations were never negative. If anything, he tried to challenge her beliefs. That was almost as much fun as the cooking lessons he had insisted on giving her every night when he came home from work.

Dinner was 'their time', work and school never entered into it. He would teach her something new to cook and regale her with stories of his great grandmother Beatrice from New Orleans and how she had taught him to cook. It had been a fun time.

Her thoughts went back to those simpler more confortable days as she sliced the tenderloin and started cooking the other parts of the meal almost automatically, the grace she normally had in combat making her cooking prepartions a ballet. For the moment, she was at peace.

"I like swimming because of the floating, I guess," Mark said quietly.
