I'm trying to come up with a list of fairly generic adventure hooks, both common and less so (I define "adventure hook" as the event that draws the party into the adventure).
Here is my list so far - please add your suggestions!
1. Party are approached in a tavern with an attractive proposition
2. Party interrupt a crime and are drawn into an adventure
3. Party are passing through a place when a crisis happens and they stay to help
4. Party are visiting a friend or relative who asks for help with a problem
5. Party are summoned by the local authorities and are asked or ordered to assist
6. Party are in prison and are offered a chance to escape
7. Party arrive at a location that has recently suffered a crisis and are asked to assist
8. Party find themselves transported to a strange place and need to figure out how to return
9. A geas is cast on one of the PCs, forcing them to do something
10. Party are approached by an old friend, who begs for help
11. A PC has a dream that leads to an adventure
12. Party hear a rumour about something interesting
13. Party hear a local legend concerning a valuable treasure
14. An enemy approaches the party with a proposition for co-operation
15. A dying person passes on information about something valuable
16. Someone attempts to assassinate one of the party, which draws them into the adventure
17. A written note turns up in their path, telling the party about an opportunity
18. The party find an old parchment promising something desirable
19. Party are suddenly attacked without warning, which draws them into the adventure
20. Party are contacted with an attractive proposition via a magical message
