Genius ideas that would make us millionaires if we weren't so lazy.

Just think of all the 50s saxophone solos you can't play on those music games (or E Street Band songs).
Remember these?:

I'm actually suprised they have not done this with Harry Potter. You could make it strictly a duel type game with hogwarts and other famous characters from that world. It would make a crap ton of green-backs.

See my post above. The Harry Potter game does have different spells that require different hand motions. Maybe I am the only person in the world that bought it? As far as I know, it is not duel centric though...

Actually from what I've read thew kinect has the ability to recognize fine details like what fingers you are holding up and even the logo on the jersey you are wearing. The current games just haven't harnessed it's full capability yet. So when they do you wouldn't have to have each spell work like a different sports gesture, have the bolt power be to pull your arm back then slam it forward, and different energy types for that bolt would be decided by your finger configuration (horns for fire, peace sign for ice, all five fingers for force, etc.). A fireball, area damage spell, could be the same but use both hands at the same time. Imo, that would feel more like casting a spell with a somatic component.

Last night some friends and I realized we all wished we had learned how to program, because we had a completely original idea for a video game so awesome that everyone would buy it and make it all rich. Since we're too lazy to do the work, though, maybe some of you could get cracking at it.

You know its not that hard to learn especially if you just doing mods. UnrealED has a great series of videos.

I'd put money on your "completely original idea" having already been thought of by about fifty development teams within 10 seconds of seeing how the Kinect worked. :)

The thing's only a couple of months old, give it time and I'm sure you'll see all this and more.

Heck, I had the idea before the Kinect came out. :) My thinking started that I wanted a rhythm game / RPG where spellcasting was music—focus on the Hero part of Guitar Hero. You'd have to improvise spells on your guitar to win at magical duels—kind of like Brütal Legend, but with actual choice instead of just repetition. The key was that spells could overlap, so the second half of your shield could be the first half of your fireball or something like that. Kicking the idea around, I thought about alternate control schemes, and started leaning towards independent gestures with each hand, then realized I was describing a real-time version of Waving Hands / Spellbinder / Warlocks (which is from 1977, for the record, so Richard Bartle had the idea before I was born). Ideally, you'd want control gloves, but you could make do with the analog sticks and triggers on a typical game controller. Now, the Kinect conveniently gets the hardware out there (though I'm not sure if it can pick up hand state, or if you'd have to base it all off of arm position).

My fortune is as good as made with a new range of player utility belts for playing your PC more authentically. They're modeled on the genius belt shown below - one for every 4e race and class. I can recommend the Paladin, complete with prayer book, flask of holy water and rosary beads. The Dwarf is proving problematic, as I'm not sure how to attach a beard, a bad Scottish accent and an mile-wide attitude problem to a belt
