George Martin?

So I've heard some good things about George Martin, but I have to admit I'm not familiar with his work. Is it good, how would you describe it? If I want to read his stuff, where should I start?

The only work of Martin's I am familiar with is his Song of Ice and Fire series of which three are out and the fourth is due in April, I believe. It is a grim 'n gritty fantasy tale. It is also one of the best series out there. The first book is A Game of Thrones. Get it. Love it.

P.S. Don't get attached to anyone.

Fevre Dream

If you can find this book, it is an excellent read. Its about vampires and riverboats on the Mississipi. I think it is one of his best works. G.R.R. Martin was the editor of the Wild Cards series, and wrote some of the stories for it. That is a series about superheroes in a "realistic" setting. Some of it is very good (especially the first book, which creates an alternate history from the 50s to the 80s), though as the series continued it got bogged down. His new series, a Song of Fire and Ice, is a fantasy setting that starts off very promising; the first book A Game of Thrones, was one of the best fantasy books I've read. However, in my opinion, the quality of the second book fell drastically; I'm sure many people will disagree, as it is a very popular series. I haven't read the third book, so I can't comment any further.

It's generally agreed (at least on the ASOIAF message board that I periodically visit) that the quality of writing fell somewhat in the second book, though I don't know about "drastically." It's also widely thought that the third book is the best of them all.

I'm a big fan of the series, and I suggest you check it out. Nothing to lose, you know. It's mostly a political intigue story, at least as far as the third book, set in a low-magic world. There are indications that magic is returning to the world. As mentioned above, though, don't get attached to any of the characters. :)

The Wild Cards series was in fact loosely based on a game of Superhero 2044 that GRRM and many of the other initial authors played in.

Aside from his own writing talents, George RR Martin is also one of the best anthology editors in sci-fi and fantasy. Pick up a book with him as one of the editors, and you are unlikely to be disappointed.

Unfortunately it has once again been pushed back to August. Although his website does not have a date because he is not finished with it yet my computer at work (I work for the largest bookselling company in the States) has a date of August 26, 2003. Once again I believe that is a tenative date because he's not done writing it yet. :(

But I'm really looking forward to this one, this series is the best one on the shelf. :)

The books are so much better without spoilers, so lets not drop any clues. On that same note, don't read to much about the series before reading them, this includes reviews because people love to stick info in the reviews.

BTW - Shame on those of you who dropped spoilers without a warning. I would have been angry.

You'd have to find an anthology for this one, but his other acclaimed story is a novella called "Sandkings". He has a website called www.georgerrmartin.com where I'm sure he has listed everything that he has done and which things won awards. It also has the latest (real) status on the 4th book in his series, so its worth checking out if you are already a fan.
