Gesalt classes with non-gesalt claases in a campaign?

yes, but the gestalt characters will be better in every way and make the other party members feel they aren't needed. I would recommend making everyone gestalt or no one gestalt, if you do make everyone gestalt you should face gestalt opponents too or it will be too easy.

not unless the players don't mind that some characters are goiong be better then other. It really depends on the classes. If someone was a Paladin/Ranger Gestalt and I was a Bard I don't think I'd care much. But if someone was a Rogu/sorcer and I was a bard, I'd care a lot more.

Yeah, a cumulative LA of +1 per level. :D

that would then make them weaker then the other classes. gestalty doesn't geth everythinjg of both classes, just the better things of each class.

My magical Crystal Ball of Balance says +2 LA for less-synergistic combinations (i.e., classes that require different stats, like Cleric Wizard), +3 LA for synergistic classes (Paladin/Sorc, Cleric/Druid, etc), and an additional +1 LA when they start taking synergistic prestige classes.

What would be the purpose / idea behind such a situation?

As others have said, Gestalt characters will be more powerful than non-Gestalt characters, and I can't imagine that a player would refuse to go Gestalt when such an option is offered to every one.

I too tend to think that it will be out of balance. Especially if the gestalt class overlaps another class. If there is a rogue and then there is a rogue/ftr that just makes them a better rogue compared to the other one.

I got the idea from my homebrew has a viking type race and one player can't see them having any other bard type then a gesalt bard-barbarian so thats all he'll playt and if her doesn't play the party doesn't have enough people and as DM I just want to make all my players happy.
