Getting a check for this.

Well, my time table just got sped up.

You see, my wife & me just bought our first house & this year will be the first year we make enough in both pay & deductions for tax purposes. I also just started working part time with a guy doing IT & web support from my home.

Thus a home office & a lot of applicable tax deductions. I had planned to also polish up my D20 (I've been doing technical writing for the past several years) writing & shop around to find an occasional writing gig (thus why I've started posting more & more here, to improve).

Now he's been offered a really nice job with a local company (salary plus commission) and is seriously considering taking it (he's making a counter offer for a higher salary). He takes it, my home office is sunk.

Thus my timetable to try to find an outlet for my work has just (probably) been accelerated.

I am not looking to become the next Monte Cook, or even make a living at it.

I'm just looking to get a check even now and again for my favourite hobby (if I could get paid for birdwatching, I'd do that too).

So, aside from Dragon, what avenues from a occasional freelancer are out there? Ideally (to begin with) just a few monsters there, some magic items here, a race of prestige class there. I have no illusions about my ability, I can write 32-64 page supplements, I'm just so out of practice and have so little free time, they would take way too long for me to get done.

Where are places to spread my material around so it gets noticed & how did people here get the gigs they did.

Keep an eye on the open call and job opportunities forum in the publishers section - it largely contains this kind of information. Blue Devil Games just sent out a call for d20 Future stuff for an upcoming magazine, and Phil Reed just asked for folks who had an interest in writing PDF's.
