Getting a full set is unreasonable

See that's the spirit I'm tlaking about...you 'need' it. Why?

I have a sack full of these from multiple boosters, etc, that receive constant use at the gaming table...but I've never even considered trying to collect a full set.

What's the motivation here...is it just crack for gamers or another time/money waster or what?

Ah, now I know I'm on his ignore list. Well, let's start making jokes behind his back.

of course, somehow I doubt I'll get the

That reminds me of something: They made a step back - several of the critters that should have been uncommons were rares. I'm talking about the dire tiger for example. Why's that rare? That's the first rare dire animal since what? The first dire wolf?

I have a very, very limited ignore list.

Didn't mean to disrupt the thread, carry on.

It was a perfectly valid decision - Dire Tigers are higher CR than every Dire Animal except the shark, and they are usually encountered alone. Hence, it's a perfect Rare, unlike the Dire Wolf and Dire Lion, both of which can attack in groups.

I'm just trying to get into the 'collector's head...what makes it tick, or more specifically, what makes it tick differently? I fully appreciate the product, just not the collectible aspect.

I wouldn't go there. It's not a... sane place :p

I'm one of those who collects at least one of every set. My main motivation is D&D, so the vast majority of my collection is for gaming. I also skirmish, which means I'll have some figures that I wouldn't otherwise have more than one of. However, I reached a point where I was only a few away from onwing full sets, so for a reason I can't explain I just decided to get the missing figures and be done with it. Now I own some figures I know I will never use and figures that I seriously dislike. But don't ask me for an explanation, 'cause I can't give you one. I know people who have vast collections and don't even use them - they're just stored in cupboards and the only time they see the light of day is when a new set is released and they get the pleasure of adding to it.

Collecting is a very private and inexplicable thing and there's nothing rational about it. The way I look it at my own collection is that at least there is a practical side to it and I get to use the vast majority of it :)

My wife, of course, thinks I'm completely insane!

The Dire Lion was a Rare (although it was an Uncommon in Unhallowed).

The first dire lion was from Dragoneye, the Dire Wolf from Giants of Legend, which was two sets down the line. The wolf was the last dire critter that was rare, until this one.

Oh, so you're ignoring me all by yourself, eh? :p

As I said, collecting's just one of these things humans do. It isn't limited to collectible miniatures, far from it. Probably stems from the early days of hunting and gathering or something. I guess you'd have to ask a shrink for the motivations behind it.
