Getting better at playing D&D

First Post
Hi, This post covers both me and my players. First me,
I am new to playing at level 6 and above. I play at home and in Living Greyhawk; I have PCs at lvl6 or on the verge in both. It seems both that at level 6 alot changes and I do not know how to handle it (for example, I can learn what my spells do as a cleric, but what challenges will I face so I know what to pray for and what to get as scrolls). Is there anyway other than to play ineffectively for a long time, get my butt kicked and be observant?

Invest some skill points in the various knowledge skills; even if you don't know about various monsters, your character might. But generally, you've got to learn through experience what works best for you. Good luck!

Edit: Are both your characters clerics?

There are quite some spells in the list, which should be useful in many circumstances.

You can leave slots open when first praying for spells for the day, and later during the day, in a short 15 minute meditation, prepare spells in those. This offers some amount of flexibility during the day, if you learn about what is lying ahead and have the time for a little break.

Thanks to the ability to spontaneously convert prepared spells into cure spells, it isn't really so bad to prepare some not so useful spells. Just try some that sound useful for you. :)

Bye

There is little reason not to get EVERY spell as a scroll (unless there is an expensive material cost or an exceedingly long casting time). You never know when you might need it. If you use it, you can always buy more. If you never use it, you have made a cheap investment into being very versatile. This also lets you be very effective while learning which spells you should be memorizing. As time goes on, you'll know which scrolls to make and which spells to memorize.
