That is still a possibility - if there were many child deaths that went unexplained or wrongly explained.
But friends and family working in education tell me they've observed the incidence of peanut and other severe allergies among kids is through the roof.
There is at least some evidence that the tendency to hyper-cleanliness and sterilizing everything around infants is actually harmful. The human immune system needs to be properly initialized through contact with stuff in the environment. Wihtout that initialization, there comes a tendency to react inappropriately - and allergies are, in essence, inappropriate immune system responses.
